  • Narrative Disruption

    Open Access•Caty Simon, LINDSAY ROBERTS et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 49

Narcofeminism Storyshare is an iterative storyshare model developed by NC Survivors Union, a harm reduction and advocacy organization led by directly impacted people, that uses autobiographical story development by women and gender diverse people who use drugs to disrupt stigmatizing societal narratives, achieve healing for individuals and communities, and spark organizing and structural change. We describe the theoretical frameworks behind Narco…

  • The Lessons Will Be Televised

Open Access•Jennifer Stevens Aubrey, Brandon Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Journalism & Mass Communication…•2023

This study examined the sexual double standard in the portrayal of sexual consequences on television. A content analysis of television programs nominated for Teen Choice Awards from 2012 to 2015 revealed that female characters received more negative sexual consequences than male characters, but there was no gender difference in who received positive sexual consequences. The gendered distribution of negative sexual consequences was qualified by ag…

Larissa Terán, LINDSAY ROBERTS et al.•ARTICLE•Mass Communication & Society•2021•References: 8

In light of recent research establishing the prevalence of the heterosexual script on television (Aubrey et al., 2020; Kim et al., 2007), the present study investigated the context of the heterosexual script in 182 episodes of tween, teen, and young adult television programs. The following scripts were assessed: sex as masculinity (masculinity is achieved through sexuality), good girls (women are sexual gatekeepers), male commitment (men avoid co…

  • The Heterosexual Script on Tween, Teen, and Young-Adult Television Programs

Jennifer Stevens Aubrey, Kun Yan et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2019•Cited by: 10•References: 2

In a well-cited 2007 paper in Journal of Sex Research, Kim and colleagues proposed and documented a heterosexual script on primetime television. In the present study, we provide a 15-year update on the portrayal of the heterosexual script, and we further examine how it relates to three contextual variables: target age of the audience, age of the characters, and relational context of the script. Drawing from a 2016 sample of television programs th…

  • Comparative Optimism and Event Skewness

    Open Access•Jason P Rose, Olivia Aspiras et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•2016•References: 11

Comparative judgment biases—wherein a majority of people report being above‐ or below‐average in their abilities, traits, or future events—are a robust phenomenon in psychology. A recent explanation for these biases has focused on people's awareness that many comparative judgment domains form skewed distributions, and, hence, a majority of people can feasibly be above or below average. Indeed, this prior research found that comparative biases for…

  • Caring for People Living with Advanced Stages of HIV/Aids in Sub-Saharan Countries

Michael M O Seipel, Claire Sorenson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Social…•2007

Given the current reality, accessing antiretroviral treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan countries is unrealistic. While other treatments are available, the most practical approach to addressing the problem is found not in treatment but in care. For those who are infected, the disease is lifelong and eventually fatal. By being provided sound, practical, realistic, and achievable care, people can enjoy a more productive life be…
