Naturalizing Machines, Mechanizing Bodies: Constructions of Personhood at the Nicu
Preterm infants represent a medical and social challenge. Their liminal state in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can jeopardize parental recognition of their personhood and even of their status as human beings. Aware of how this could affect infants' recovery, the neonatal team enacts material and symbolic strategies that appeal to practices framed as "natural" and that parents are expected to perform. We argue that this process simultane…
Between 'fetal viability' and the 'viability of families: Decision-making for extremely premature infants in Spain
Risk and decision-making: Communication between health professionals and pregnant women at risk of preeclampsia in Catalonia
The biomedical model of attention focuses on preventive risk assessment to mitigate the apparition of future diseases. In the event of a pregnancy classified "at risk" of preeclampsia, screening undertaken in first-term ultrasound controls determines which patients receive preventive treatment. This article examines women's narratives on the communication dynamics with health professionals by drawing on an eight-month ethnographic fieldwork, betw…
Tempting Luck: Temporalities and Risk Anticipation among Egg Donors in Spain
Within the expanding bioeconomy of assisted reproduction, there are limitations to providing quality informed consent for egg donation when the long-term risks remain unknown. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Barcelona with egg donors and in vitro fertilization (IVF) professionals, in this paper, we speak of "temporal choreography" to describe how clinical practices delimit and circumscribe the information that will be offered to egg donors by …
Recentering Labor in the Egg Donation Bioeconomy: Egg Donors' (Re)productive Work and Subjectification in Spain
In 2019, Spanish fertility clinics reached a historical record of ova extractions. A total of 14,521 surgeries were performed to serve the growing egg demand internationally. Here I show how bringing a cycle to completion is not an easy task for egg donors. Selecting a clinic, understanding their own biocapital in the industry and how to invest it, fitting the cycle into their lives, and managing pain and emotions become crucial parts of their wo…
Intimate Voices in Transnational Reproductive Markets
The idea of this special issue, which foregrounds the experiences and perspectives of egg donors and surrogates, emerged following the completion of our respective doctoral research on the reproduc
Beyond the making of altruism: Branding and identity in egg donation websites in Spain
Selecting women, taming bodies? Body ontologies in egg donation practices in Spain
According to the Spanish law of assisted reproduction, women intending to donate eggs must be “in good psychophysical health” and “do not suffer from genetic or infectious hereditary diseases transmissible to the offspring” (chapter II, article 5). What a “good” psychophysical health condition is, what the “transmissible diseases” are, and what counts as disease at all remains contested. In this paper, we explore how these broad legal criteria ma…
