  • Life expectancy as a summary of mortality in a population

    P B S Silcocks, P Silcocks et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2001•Cited by: 12•References: 3

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the sampling distribution and usefulness of expectation of life in comparisons of mortality at health district level or below. DESIGN: Derivation of a formula for the variance of the expectation of life, confirmation of the result and generation of the sampling distribution by Monte Carlo simulation; comparison of expectation of life with standardised mortality ratio (SMR) and other summary indices of mortality. SETTING:…

  • Relationships between blood pressure and measures of dietary energy intake, physical fitness, and physical activity in Australian children aged 11-12 years

    D A JENNER, R Vandongen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 15

STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aim was to examine associations between blood pressure and dietary energy intake, physical activity, and physical fitness in Australian children. DESIGN--The study was a survey of year 7 children attending schools in metropolitan Perth. SETTING--Survey schools were located in suburbs representative of the range of socioeconomic strata in metropolitan Perth. PARTICIPANTS--Data were obtained on 1311 out of 2045 eligible childre…

  • Inter-population comparisons of catecholamine excretion

    Open Access•D A JENNER, G Ainsworth Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1987

Twenty-four hour urines were obtained from groups of male and female volunteers recruited from urban populations in developed and developing countries (UK, USA, Japan and Nigeria) an from agriculture-based Polynesian population (Tokelau Islands). The urines were collected on typical working days, with minimal disturbance to subjects' normal routines. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to determine catecholamine concentrations in each…

  • Inter-population comparisons of urinary catecholamines

    Open Access•D A JENNER, G Ainsworth Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1982

Urinary catecholamine excretion rates, previously shown to be related to lifestyles and environmental influences, were investigated in three traditional-living populations and in an English population. Significant inter-population differences in excretion rates and in creatinine-related excretion were observed. These included high daytime levels of adrenaline output in the traditional groups relative to the English group. Methodological problems …

  • Catecholamine excretion rates in relation to life-styles in the male population of Otmoor, Oxfordshire

    Open Access•Vernon Reynolds, D A JENNER et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1981

The paper gives the results of the number of analyses of aspects of life-style and dietary patterns of members of the Otmoor population, in relation to their catecholamine excretion rates. The data reported here are restricted to males. Feelings of boredom were associated with low adrenaline excretion rates. Reported physical tiredness was associated with low adrenaline levels, while mental tiredness seems to be related to high adrenaline levels.…

  • Similarities between husbands and wives in rates of catecholamine excretion

    Open Access•G Ainsworth Harrison, C D Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1980

Husband-wife correlations for catecholamine excretion rates are presented. Highly significant positive correlations are found in adrenaline excretion in samples collected in the early morning and at around noon, and in noon noradrenaline excretion
