  • Monitoring Technology: The Impact of Body-Worn Cameras on Citizen-Police Interactions

Daniel Barbosa, Daniel AC Barbosa et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

We provide experimental evidence that using body-worn cameras (BWCs) for police monitoring improves police-citizen interactions. In an intervention carried out in Brazil in 2018, we find that treated incidents show a 61.2% decrease in police use of force and a 47.0% reduction in adverse interactions, including handcuff use and arrests. The use of body-worn cameras also significantly improves the quality of police reporting. The rate of incomplete…

  • Losing on the home front? Battlefield casualties, media, and public support for foreign interventions

Open Access•Thiemo Fetzer, Pedro Souza et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Political…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 57

How domestic constituents respond to signals of weakness in foreign wars remains an important question in international relations. This paper studies the impact of battlefield casualties and media coverage on public demand for war termination. To identify the effect of troop fatalities, we leverage the timing of survey collection across respondents from nine members of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. Quasi‐experimental…

  • Community policing does not build citizen trust in police or reduce crime in the Global South

Open Access•Graham Blair, Jeremy M Weinstein et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2021

Easier said than done High-profile instances of police brutality in the last few years have brought attention to patterns of abuse that have existed since the inception of modern policing. There have been many calls for police reform, a process that in many countries has taken the form of increased police engagement with communities. Blair et al . report the results of a large-scale experiment testing the effectiveness of this approach across six…

  • Security Transitions

Thiemo Fetzer, Pedro Souza et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2021

How do foreign powers disengage from a conflict? We study this issue by examining the recent, large-scale security transition from international troops to local forces in the ongoing civil conflict in Afghanistan. We construct a new dataset that combines information on this transition process with declassified conflict outcomes and previously unreleased quarterly survey data of residents’ perceptions of local security. Our empirical design levera…

  • Estimation and Selection of Spatial Weight Matrix in a Spatial Lag Model

Clifford Lam, Pedro Souza et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2020

Spatial econometric models allow for interactions among variables through the specification of a spatial weight matrix. Practitioners often face the risk of misspecification of such a matrix. In many problems a number of potential specifications exist, such as geographic distances, or various economic quantities among variables. We propose estimating the best linear combination of these specifications, added with a potentially sparse adjustment m…

I intend in this paper show how the voice can become symbolic object, ie, a phenomenon consisting in the limit of some interpretive procedure applied to a precise process of subjectivation. To do so, I look for the interview with Elis Regina in emission tv, 1973, named Programa Ensaio. Methodologically, I pay attention to the points of transition between speech and singing committed by the singer in connection with your interviewer. The objective…

Neste artigo, pretende-se relacionar a dinâmica da queda da desigualdade de renda no Brasil, observada na última década, à estrutura de classes no país.
