Tributes to Robert W. McChesney
To conclude our special issue on Robert W. McChesney's legacy, MR presents a series of tributes capturing his impact on the world around him. The diversity represented by these illustrious contributors, from his colleagues at the media watch group Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) to Senator Bernie Sanders, is a testament to McChesney's enduring influence
Can the European nuclear power industry compete with the Chinese nuclear power industry
European commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, told Le Journal du Dimanche in January 2022, “Existing nuclear plants alone will need 50 billion euros of investment from now until 2030. And new generation ones will need 500 billion”. This paper considers whether these values are realistic. Further, it asks whether these investments would yield an internationally competitive European nuclear power infrastructure given that the nucle…
On the Optimal Lifetime of Nuclear Powe Plants
We present an empirical model of optimal operation of nuclear power plants. The optimal lifetime is the solution to an optimal stopping problem: The plant is closed when the expected discounted losses from continued operation exceed the discounted costs of decommissioning. We forecast the evolution of the nuclear power industry under the current regime of 40-year operating licenses and for a policy allowing 20-year license extensions. We conclude…

Organizational Structure and Expected Output at Nuclear Power Plants
This paper examines the relationship between organizational structure and operation and outage durations at nuclear power plants in the United States. It empirically examines Aoki's (1990) proposition that (1) hierarchical control increases productivity in situations that are very stable or very uncertain and (2) horizontal coordination increases productivity in intermediate situations. It describes a model of continuous production in which manag…
Safety at nuclear power plants
The Price-Anderson Act has indemnified the commercial nuclear power industry since its inception. This article proposes a present value model of firm investment in reactor safety systems to investigate the safety incentives of the 1988 amendments to the Act. While the amendments increase safety incentives for electric utilities through insurance regulation, safety behavior depends crucially on the anticipated reaction of the state regulatory comm…
