  • A Global Deal For Nature: Guiding principles, milestones, and targets

    Open Access•E Dinerstein, C Vynne et al.•ARTICLE•Science Advances•2019

The Global Deal for Nature sets an ambitious agenda to protect our biosphere through ecosystem conservation and land restoration.

  • Participatory threat assessment of two major wildlife corridors in the Terai Arc Landscape

Open Access•Bijan Gurung, Shant Raj Jnawali et al.•ARTICLE•PARKS•2018

Threats within the Basanta and Laljhadi-Mohana wildlife corridors that connect protected areas in the Terai Arc Landscape were assessed in 2012 and 2014. The threat ranking employed a participatory and multi-stakeholder process with members of government agencies and the community. The team used two different methodologies in 2012 and 2014. In the first assessment in 2012, biodiversity targets and direct threats were identified in a conceptual mo…

  • An Ecoregion-Based Approach to Protecting Half the Terrestrial Realm

Open Access•E Dinerstein, David Olson et al.•ARTICLE•BioScience•2017

We assess progress toward the protection of 50% of the terrestrial biosphere to address the species-extinction crisis and conserve a global ecological heritage for future generations. Using a map of Earth's 846 terrestrial ecoregions, we show that 98 ecoregions (12%) exceed Half Protected; 313 ecoregions (37%) fall short of Half Protected but have sufficient unaltered habitat remaining to reach the target; and 207 ecoregions (24%) are in peril, w…

  • Terrestrial Ecoregions of the World: A New Map of Life on Earth

    David M Olson, E Dinerstein et al.•ARTICLE•BioScience•2001

The tapestry of life on Earth is unraveling as humans increasingly dominate and transform natural ecosystems. Scarce resources and dwindling time force conservationists to target their actions to stem the loss of biodiversity—a pragmatic approach, given the highly uneven distribution of species and threats (Soulé and Kohm 1989, Olson and Dinerstein 1998, Mace et al. 2000, Myers et al. 2000). Unfortunately, the ability to focus strategically is hi…
