Challenges for conservation and sustainable use in North America
Conservation will only increase as a focus for governments in the 21st century. Canada and the United States have been successful in conserving wildlife and habitats over the past 100 years through the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. This approach is not universally accepted, however, and there are challenges to sustainable use practices such as hunting and fishing. Herein, we discuss seven of the biggest challenges to conservation…
How the Boone and Crockett Club (B&C) shaped North American conservation
Wildlife in North America was under great threat in the late 1800s and large mammals and birds were declining at a rapid rate. There were no legal restrictions on the use of natural resources and excessive exploitation was the rule. To return wildlife to their historic habitats required immediate action. Theodore Roosevelt and other prominent citizens formed the B&C in 1887 for this purpose. The B&C became a leading force in the formation of nati…
Conservation and management of ungulates in North America
The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation had its genesis, in part, with the conservation of native ungulates. Thus, it is important to understand what these species are and how they have been and are, currently, managed. Ungulates are hooved quadrupeds that include those that are odd-toed (e.g. tapirs [Tapirus bairdii]) and even-toed (e.g. deer). Contemporary management of the ungulates evolved through three stages: exploitation, concern…
Applying methodological pluralism to wildlife and the economy
Knowledge of and Attitudes Toward Mountain Lions
If humans and mountain lions(Puma concolor)are to coexist, managers need to understand how both use an area and understand the local public’s view toward large predators. In spring 2000, the authors conducted a telephone survey of 9 local wildlife managers and a mail survey to assess 493 suburban residents’ knowledge of and attitudes toward mountain lions near Tucson, Arizona. All agencies wanted more information that could lead to improved manag…
