  • Ecotourism Potential of the World Heritage Site “Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments”

Open Access•Igor Popov, Evgeny Abakumov et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2026•References: 1

Founded in 1703, St. Petersburg was the capital of the Russian Empire. Its historic center and associated monuments are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its components are classified as cultural rather than natural or mixed. We hypothesized that a part of them has an additional ecotourism value. We carried out field observations along with a review of the literature. Our results confirmed the hypothesis: many of these sites retain impor…

  • What has changed in Mount Elbrus’ landscape since the first expedition two centuries ago? An in situ assessment along the same route reveals symptoms of the shifting baseline syndrome

Open Access•Igor Popov, Anton Iurmanov et al.•ARTICLE•Socio-Ecological Practice Research•2025

  • Prospects of Development for Urban Areas in the Russian Arctic

    Open Access•Igor Popov•ARTICLE•Sibirica•2022•References: 6

The development of the Arctic was an important political and economic topic of the Soviet Union. This urbanization activity declined dramatically in the economic and political chaos of the 1990s, although some positive transformations have been seen in the new millennium. This article examines whether the colonization of the Russian Arctic will follow Soviet-era plans or the region will remain scarcely populated in the near future. The history an…

  • The current state of Pleistocene Park, Russia (An experiment in the restoration of megafauna in a boreal environment)

    Open Access•Igor Popov•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•References: 4

Pleistocene Park is a protected area located near the Arctic Circle in the Eastern part of Russia. It was established by Sergey Zimov and his team in order to perform an experiment on the restoration of the environment that existed there during the Pleistocene period. It was expected that low-productivity boreal habitats would be replaced by highly-productive grasslands resembling African savanna. This experiment was launched in 1988, and its con…

  • Documenting lemming population change in the Arctic

    Open Access•Dorothee Ehrich, Niels M Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 39

Lemmings are a key component of tundra food webs and changes in their dynamics can affect the whole ecosystem. We present a comprehensive overview of lemming monitoring and research activities, and assess recent trends in lemming abundance across the circumpolar Arctic. Since 2000, lemmings have been monitored at 49 sites of which 38 are still active. The sites were not evenly distributed with notably Russia and high Arctic Canada underrepresente…

  • Monitoring Least Weasels after a Winter Peak of Lemmings in Taimyr

Open Access•Nicole Feige, Dorothee Ehrich et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2012

Least weasels are highly specialized small-rodent predators. Despite the fact that they are hypothesized to play an important role in generating the lemming cycles, a key process for the functioning of the terrestrial tundra ecosystem, very little is known about the biology of these miniature carnivores in the Arctic. At Mys Vostochny in western Taimyr, Russia, least weasels were observed for the first time during a lemming peak in 2005, but not …
