Bow and Arrow Technology in North America
The adoption and spread of bow and arrow technology in North America reflect a complex interplay of ecological and social factors: While environmental variables such as wood availability and prey diversity/behavior were surely important, demographic and cultural variables—including population size, density, and connectivity; cultural transmission processes; and social dynamics—were equally or more influential. Parsing the relative effects of thes…
Searching for prehistoric campfires in the Patagonian Andes, Southern Chile, with implications for the global-scale debate on the use of forest resources in pre-industrial societies
Little is known about human occupation of the Aysén region of Patagonia beyond a relatively small number of cave and rock shelter sites. Recent magnetic survey and auguring over a broad area in the vicinity of known sites yielded no cultural material, drawing attention to ongoing debate about human use of forests in prehistory
Spatial and temporal trends in Peru's radiocarbon record of middle Holocene foragers
Obsidian hydration dating by infrared transmission spectroscopy
The obsidian dating method converts the quantity of diffused molecular water within a near‐surface hydration layer to elapsed time using an experimentally derived diffusion coefficient predicted from the structural water content of the glass. Infrared spectroscopic transmission measurements on transparent archaeological samples record vibrational responses of water bands in the near‐infrared region, permitting determination of structural water co…
Human consumption of large herbivore digesta and its implications for foraging theory
Vegetal matter undergoing digestion in herbivores' stomachs and intestines, digesta , can be an important source of dietary carbohydrates for human foragers. Digesta significantly increases large herbivores' total caloric yield and broadens their nutritional profile to include three key macronutrients (protein, fat, and carbohydrates) in amounts sufficient to sustain small foraging groups for multiple days without supplementation. Ethnographic re…
Reassessing Early Archaic projectile point typologies in the Carolina Piedmont through gross morphometric analysis
Palmer and Kirk Corner-Notched projectile points are common in archaeological assemblages of the Carolina Piedmont dating to the Early Archaic (11,500–9,000 cal BP). These types were initially described by Joffre Lanning Coe ([1964] The Formative Cultures of the Carolina Piedmont. Transactions of the American Philosophical Society 54(5):1–130. DOI:10.2307/3231919) in his seminal typology and are now well documented as the primary hafted bifacial …
Prehistoric Human Occupation of Southern Andean Forests
Use of Patagonia's forests by hunter-gatherers remains relatively poorly understood. Regional archaeological records indicate initial forest colonization during the middle Holocene, infrequent use until late prehistory, and, even then, fairly sparse occupation, likely in conjunction with use of the adjacent steppe. Recent excavations at Río Ibáñez-6 West in Aysén, Chile, provide a new perspective for understanding the prehistoric use of Patagonia…
Hunter-Gatherer Subsistence Variation and Intensification
Deconstructing a complex obsidian “source‐scape”
Northwestern Patagonia is located in a tectonically active part of the southern Andes (Argentina), which has facilitated the formation of obsidian, including pyroclastic deposits that have been affected by geomorphic processes, resulting in a complex obsidian landscape. To date, the geomorphic relocation of obsidian in the landscape has not been a focus of systematic research, and this hampers our understanding of prehistoric human mobility. We p…

Obsidian geochemistry, geoarchaeology, and lithic technology in northwestern Patagonia (Argentina)
Confronting complexities of artifact–geofact debates
An assemblage of coarse volcanic rock (CVR) derived from the walls of a rockshelter in Aisén, Chile was recently described as consisting of bifaces, projectile points, and picks [Prentiss et al. 2015a. Lithic Technology 40:112–127]. The objects are not universally accepted as cultural, however, on account of both their crude appearance and the fact that CVR industries have not been previously identified in either the valley where the objects were…
Archaeological Age Estimation Based on Obsidian Hydration Data for Two Southern Andean Sources
Obsidian is abundant in archaeological sites throughout Mendoza Province, Argentina but no obsidian hydration rates exist to date these assemblages. Direct dating of obsidian artifacts is particularly important in west-central Argentina because the surface record is extensive but well-defined time marker artifacts are lacking. The costs of non-optical hydration dating techniques currently preclude their regular use in the region, however. We pres…

Hunter-Gatherers
Hunter-gatherer research has played a historically central role in the development of anthropological and evolutionary theory. Today, research in this traditional and enduringly vital field blurs lines of distinction between archaeology and ethnology, and seeks instead to develop perspectives and theories broadly applicable to anthropology and its many subdisciplines. In the groundbreaking first edition of Hunter-Gatherers: Archaeological and Evo…
Las Cargas
The importance of obsidian from the northern Patagonian source at Las Cargas is reflected in its early use (∼8000 years B.P.) and extensive geographic diffusion but is nonetheless surprising in light of the source's high altitude (located in the Andes Cordillera), which makes it both difficult to access under ideal conditions and inaccessible for much of the year. Prehistoric use of the Las Cargas source can inform us about mobility, subsistence …

A behavioural ecological approach to a proposed middle Holocene occupational gap
Relative to other periods, there are very few recorded sites of middle Holocene age in Mendoza Province, Argentina. This analysis weighs the preliminary results of a regional study in Mendoza against three possible explanations for the small number of middle Holocene sites: poor visibility, reduced population density and behavioural adaptation. While changes in visibility and population density cannot be dismissed, evidence suggests that the scar…
