  • The relationship between masculinity and the Type A behavior pattern

Open Access•Itsuko Dohi, Fumio Yamada et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2001

The purpose of the study was to examine whether a high level of masculinity is associated with the Type A behavior pattern, and whether the level of femininity moderates any main effect for masculinity. The subjects were 743 male and 560 female undergraduate students. In the statistical analysis, we found evidence of the masculinity effect on every Type A score, and a moderating effect of femininity on the “speed‐power” subscale score. We discuss…

  • Effect of Gender-Types on Interpersonal Stress Measured by Blink Rate and Questionnaires

Open Access•Kumi Hirokawa, Fumio Yamada et al.•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2001

This study was conducted to determine how differences of self gender-type and partner's gendertype in Japan had an effect on interpersonal stress (anxiety/uneasiness) during a conversation among mixed-sex pairs. The level of interpersonal stress was discussed in relation to blink rate. The participants were assigned to one of the following four pair types: (a) Male and female were androgynous (maleA-femaleA); (b) Male was androgynous and female w…

  • The effects of sex, self gender type, and partner's gender type on interpersonal adjustment during a first encounter

Open Access•Kumi Hirokawa, Itsuko Dohi et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2000

The present study compared the effects of sex, self gender type, and partner's gender type on interpersonal adjustment during a 5‐min first encounter of androgynous and stereotypically sex‐typed couples. The 52 subjects were assigned to one of four mixed‐sex couple types: sex‐typed male and female (MF); sex‐typed male and androgynous female (MA); androgynous male and sex‐typed female (AF); and androgynous male and female (AA). Questionnaires (the…

  • Risk of health care professionals acquiring HIV infection in Latin America

Nilton José Fernandes Cavalcante, E S Abreu et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•1991

This study describes the professional risk of acquiring HIV infection while caring for AIDS patients at a teaching hospital in Brazil. Since 1985 we have tested health care professionals (HCP) for HIV-1 antibody after accidents with blood and body fluids from AIDS patients. The blood samples were tested twice using an ELISA FDA approved test and, if positive, we performed Western blot. Two hundred and forty seven health care professionals reporte…

  • The Effect of Signalling Upon Control of an Aversive Stimulus

Katsuyuki Yamasaki, Fumio Yamada et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1980

When an aversive stimulus (S2) follows a weak neutral stimulus (S1), the responses to S2 are modified. Compared with an S2-alone control, facilitation occurs in the long-ISI (e. g., 8 s) condition, while inhibition occurs in the short-ISI (e. g., . 5s). The S1 employed in this kind of study can have the three properties of time, warning, and physical stimulation as a signal. In this study, the relations between response modifications and S1 prope…

  • Lead-Stimulation Effects on Human Startle Eyeblink Recorded by an Electrode Hookup

Fumio Yamada, Katsuyuki Yamasaki et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1979

The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of the electrode hookup technique in studying the startle eyeblink reflex and the lead-stimulation effects upon it. In Experiment I, 60 subjects were tested to identify the distributional properties of the reflex amplitude. The results showed that the amplitude was distributed normally when a log-transformation was performed. Positive correlations between the measures of reflex and spontane…
