  • The Correspondence of Assurbanipal, Part II

Christopher Jones, Christopher W Jones•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Society…•2024

  • Post-traumatic stress and future substance use outcomes

    Open Access•Henri M Garrison‐Desany, Jacquelyn L Meyers et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

PTSD symptoms were highly associated with tobacco and alcohol use, while the association with prospective cannabis use is not clear. Findings suggest that understanding the different risk stratification that occurs can aid in tailoring interventions to populations at greatest risk to best mitigate the comorbidity between PTSD symptoms and future substance use outcomes. We demonstrate that this is particularly salient for tobacco use and, to some …

  • Longitudinal associations between five factor model and impulsive personality traits and PTSD symptoms

  • The Decline and Fall of the Assyrian Court Scholar

    Open Access•Christopher Jones, Christopher W Jones•ARTICLE•Avar An Interdisciplinary Journal…•2023

Scholars have long been divided over whether the correspondence of scholars with the Assyrian kings Esarhaddon and Ashurbanipal represents an anomaly or a typical relationship between scholars and kings in the ancient Near East. This paper uses social network analysis to examine the changing social status of scholars in Assyria. It argues that the reign of Esarhaddon saw the emergence of an ‘inner circle’ of scholars who maintained power and infl…

  • Failed Coup

Christopher Jones, Christopher W Jones•ARTICLE•Journal of Ancient Near Eastern…•2023

Forty-three years after the publication of Simo Parpola’s article “The Murderer of Sennacherib,” the events of his assassination in 681 BC and Esarhaddon’s accession to the throne continue to provoke debate. More than a simple act of murder, the assassination of Sennacherib should be understood as an attempted coup d’ état , a strategically planned attempt to use force to bring about a change in political leadership. Combining a new examination o…

  • Effects of Aircraft Noise on Sleep

Open Access•Mathias Basner, Ian Barnett et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Aircraft noise can disrupt sleep and impair recuperation. The last U.S. investigation into the effects of aircraft noise on sleep dates back more than 20 years. Since then, traffic patterns and the noise levels produced by single aircraft have changed substantially. It is therefore important to acquire current data on sleep disturbance relative to varying degrees of aircraft noise exposure in the U.S. that can be used to check and potentially upd…

  • The Literary-Historical Memory of Sargon of Akkad in Assyria as the Background for Nimrod in Genesis 10

Christopher Jones, Christopher W Jones•ARTICLE•Journal of Biblical Literature•2022

The figure of Nimrod in Gen 10:8–12 remains enigmatic: while the passage clearly depicts a Mesopotamian figure, no consensus has been reached on attempts to identify Nimrod with any historical or mythological character. I argue that the passage dates from the mid-seventh century and should be understood in light of the literary-historical memory of Sargon of Akkad and the Akkad dynasty then circulating in the Neo-Assyrian Empire. With royal suppo…

  • Understanding Isis's Destruction of Antiquities as a Rejection of Nationalism

    Christopher W Jones•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern Mediterranean…•2018•Cited by: 12•References: 10

This article argues that the campaign of antiquities destruction waged by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) should be understood in the context of the group's rejection of the nation-state. The Ba'athist regimes of Iraq and Syria used archaeology not only as a tool to promote national unity but also as an ideological narrative to portray their states as continual recapitulations of their pasts. As a result, the pre-Islamic past came to b…

  • Sleep deprivation and stressors

Jared Minkel, Jared D Minkel et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2012

Stress often co-occurs with inadequate sleep duration, and both are believed to impact mood and emotion. It is not yet known whether inadequate sleep simply increases the intensity of subsequent stress responses or interacts with stressors in more complicated ways. To address this issue, we investigated the effects of one night of total sleep deprivation on subjective stress and mood in response to low-stress and high-stress cognitive testing con…

  • Research on Sexual Orientation

Michael G Shively, Christopher Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•1984•Cited by: 9

An extensive survey of the research literature on sexual orientation was undertaken for the purpose of determining how sexual orientation had been conceptually and operationally defined and how research subjects had been identified and selected. Two hundred-twenty-eight articles from 47 different journals were analyzed. Sexual orientation, it was found, was conceptually defined in 28 studies and operationally defined in 168. In 196 studies respon…
