American big cats on the spotlight
Through content analysis, we reviewed 853 news articles from 2015–2020 to assess how jaguars and pumas are portrayed in Latin America. Science Communication (27%) and Sighting reports (18%) were the most common topics. About half of the news had a positive framing, 37% were neutral, and 12% showed a negative frame. Most of the positive news were related to jaguars (66%), and the negative to pumas (80%). Government agents were the main interest gr…
Predation on livestock and its influence on tolerance toward pumas in agroecosystems of the Argentine Dry Chaco
As an apex predator, pumas (Puma concolor) frequently enter into conflict with humans because of predation on livestock. We analyzed the association between puma predation and human tolerance in six agroecosystems of the Argentine Dry Chaco, a global deforestation hotspot. Specifically, we addressed attitudes and behaviors of local social actors toward pumas, their association to reported livestock predation, and the incidence of livestock manage…
Perceptions of Human–Carnivore Conflicts in the High Andes of Argentina
The Andean cat (Leopardus jacobitus), one of the world's most threatened felids, forms part of the little-known carnivore guild occurring in the dry areas of the High Andes. Although human–carnivore conflicts are among the major causes of carnivore population decline, no data are available on this issue for the High Andes. We report here the results of the first survey of human perceptions of, and attitudes towards, carnivores in the high-altitud…
Aggressive behaviour in free-ranging guanacos and vicuñas in Argentina
The aggressive behaviour of free-ranging guanacos and vicuñas, living in sympatry in Catamarca Andes, Argentina, was analysed in relation to their social organisations. These organisations include territorial family units, solo males (territorial or not), and bachelor groups. In both guanacos and vicuñas, family groups tended to have higher rates of agonistic interactions than bachelors and to be frequently involved in aggressive encounters, wher…
