  • Unusual Predation Attempts of Polar Bears on Ringed Seals in the Southern Beaufort Sea

Open Access•Ian Stirling, Evan S Richardson et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2009

In April and May 2003 through 2006, unusually rough and rafted sea ice extended for several tens of kilometres offshore in the southeastern Beaufort Sea from about Atkinson Point to the Alaska border. Hunting success of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) seeking seals was low despite extensive searching for prey. It is unknown whether seals were less abundant in comparison to other years or less accessible because they maintained breathing holes below…

  • Wolf ( Canis lupus ) Predation of a Polar Bear ( Ursus maritimus ) Cub on the Sea Ice off Northwestern Banks Island, Northwest Territories, Canada

    Open Access•Evan S Richardson, Dennis Andriashek•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2009

We describe the apparent predation of a polar bear (Ursus maritimus) cub by wolves (Canis lupus) on the sea ice just off the northwest coast of Banks Island, Northwest Territories, Canada. On 20 April 2004, while following the tracks of a female bear and two cubs-of-the-year in the snow during a helicopter survey, we noted that the bear tracks had been joined by several sets of wolf tracks. After following both sets of tracks for about 1 km, we o…

  • Polar Bear ( Ursus maritimus ) Denning in the Area of the Simpson Peninsula, Nunavut

Open Access•OMI Franz Van de Velde, Ian Stirling et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2003

The locations of polar bear snow dens in winter on the Simpson Peninsula, Nunavut, and nearby islands to the northwest, and information on the sex and age class of a subsample of the occupants of 73 dens, were recorded from interviews with Inuit hunters at Pelly Bay, at intervals from 1937 to 1965 and 1968 to 1969. Hunting bears at winter dens, after locating them with the assistance of dogs, was legal during that period and was widely practiced …

  • Observations of Polar Bear Predatory Behaviour toward Caribou

    Open Access•Ryan K Brooks, Ryan K Brook et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2002

A polar bear (Ursus maritimus) was observed unsuccessfully stalking and chasing caribou (Rangifer tarandus) in western Hudson Bay. Before chasing the caribou, the polar bear appeared to make use of wind direction and vegetation cover in order to move close to them. While there have been very few documented cases of the two species interacting, our observations indicate that polar bears will stalk and chase caribou
