  • A Perception-Based Assessment of Buffer Zone Programs’ Contribution to Integrated Conservation and Development

    Neelam C Poudyal, Thakur Silwal et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2024•References: 4

Protected areas (PA) often adopt buffer zone program to share PA benefit with local people and improve community support for conservation. However, the effectiveness of such policies is still unknown. By utilizing household survey data from six PAs (n = 2,121), we assessed contribution of Nepal's Buffer Zone Program in conservation and sustainable development. While the residents showed limited knowledge about the program's specific details and p…

  • Past monsoon rainfall variations in peninsular India recorded in a 331-year-old speleothem

    Open Access•M G Yadava, R Ramesh et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 4

An actively growing stalagmite collected from a cave located in the hills of the Western Ghats in the Uttar Kannada District of Karnataka, India, has been studied for stable isotope ratios of oxygen and carbon, width of growth layers and grey-level changes. Distinct carbonate layers, alternate coarse and compact, are seen in cross-section. Each couplet of compact and coarse layer is found to represent a single year. A total of 331 such couplets h…

  • Dendroclimatic reconstruction of summer precipitation at Srinagar, Kashmir, India, since the late-eighteenth century

    Open Access•H P Borgaonkar, G B Pant et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1994•Cited by: 2

The extensive coniferous forests of the western Himalayas provide great potential for dendroclimatic research. Abies, Cedrus, Picea and Pinus are the main tree genera of the region, consisting of many old and living trees. The annual growth-ring patterns of these trees, which can be precisely dated, contain valuable high-resolution information on climate variability over the past few centuries. This paper presents an analysis of the ring-width da…
