Occupancy of Sympatric Central Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) and Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in Campo Ma’an Conservation Area, Southern Cameroon
Human–Elephant Conflict Around Bénoué National Park, Cameroon
Crop raiding by African elephants threatens human livelihoods and elephants, yet studies of long-term changes in crop raiding and effects on attitudes are lacking. The scope of perceived crop damage in three communities and local attitudes toward elephants and protected areas were surveyed in the Bénoué Wildlife Conservation Area, Cameroon in 2010. Temporal changes in attitudes and perceived crop damage were estimated using previous work. The per…
Wildlife and Land Use Conflicts in the Mbam and Djerem Conservation Region, Cameroon
This study identified actual and potential resource-use conflicts around the Mbam and Djerem National Park, Cameroon and elucidated ways of mitigating them. Informal interviews were conducted and questionnaires were administered to 263 households from 11 communities. Ninety-one percent of respondents had experienced crop depredation from wildlife over the past two years. A negative relationship was found between distance to park border and the pe…
Healer-driven ethnoveterinary knowledge diffusion among semi-nomadic pastoralists in Karamoja, Uganda
Healer-driven ethnoveterinary knowledge diffusion among semi-nomadic pastoralists in Karamoja, Uganda
Karamojong, semi-nomadic pastoralists of Uganda, rely on indigenous knowledge (IK) for their own healthcare and their livestock’s. It is important to preserve, promote and protect IK, in order to keep it from disappearing. One way is to facilitate its diffusion. The aim of this study was to compare the status of ethnoveterinary knowledge (EVK) in three unrelated communities to investigate whether organised healer-promoted EVK is more easily diffu…
Disturbance Effects of Human Activities on Rangifer Tarandus Habitat
This paper reviews the disturbance effects of human activities on reindeer/caribou (Rangifer tarandus) habitat in arctic/subarctic ecosystems. We further discuss implications of the use of such disturbed habitat on Rangifer's life history and population dynamics, an aspect that has been overlooked. Effects of disturbances vary with the type, size, scale, and intensity of disturbance; evidence is presented of adverse effects on use of disturbed ha…
