Open Access•Bhubaneswor Dhakal, Hugh R Bigsby et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2007

The present article examines the relationship between community forest management policies on the one hand, and income and unemployment in rural areas of Nepal on the other, by modeling the effect of forest management constraints on community forest use. Current government policy dictates the use of all community forestland for environmental conservation and limited timber production, and provides little scope for fodder and firewood production. …

Natural sites are key attractions for tourists in New Zealand. Soaring international visitor arrivals and strong growth in domestic tourism is placing increasing pressure on many New Zealand nature-based tourism sites. A rapidly growing number of businesses advertise their activities to tourists as 'ecotourism' but the term suffers from ambiguity and lacks ownership. This paper reports ideas from a New Zealand workshop comprising representatives …

Sites are scarce, depletable resources. Development at sites frequently involves losses of aesthetic, recreational, and spiritual qualities. Attempts to quantify these losses are increasingly made via nonmarket valuation techniques. Conservation of sites frequently involves foregoing alternative uses of the sites. The benefits which could potentially be provided by alternative uses of sites can be evaluated to provide estimates of the gross econo…

  • Expeditions, efficiency, ethics and the environment

    Ross Cullen•ARTICLE•Leisure Studies•1987

The size and style of mountaineering expeditions has long been a controversial topic. Choice of expedition size and style can have considerable influence on the magnitude of the environmental degradation they impose. Mountaineering ethics, economic forces and external pressures jointly determine expedition size and style. Data from Everest expeditions suggest their size peaked in the 1970s and has now shrunk to half their previous magnitude. A ch…
