  • An Avonlea inhumation at Split-Rock Ridge, Big Dry Creek Valley, Eastern Montana High Plains

    Leslie B Davis, J Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Side-notched arrowpoints, a knapping tool made of bone, perforated stone beads, Dentalium beads, a probable Olivella bead, and decorated and perforated mollusc shell pendants and scrap were found associated with a Late Precontact Period Native American skeleton. This individual, an adult male about 27–33 years old, had been interred in sand beneath a sandstone caprock near the top of a low ridge in a desiccated, open plains setting in Eastern Mon…

  • The Clark Creek Cache in West-Central Montana

    Patrick J Rennie, Leslie B Davis•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2016•References: 14

The majority of Precontact lithic caches from Montana cannot be chronologically placed, because they lack primary context with radiometrically datable organics or are not composed of obsidian, a datable natural glass. Dated obsidian from caches can also be positively traced to its geologic source. A rare such cache of largely obsidian pieces was found on the Sieben Ranch in 2011. Forty-three obsidian flakes and four chert flakes were observed par…

  • A vonlea Phase Winter Fare at Lost Terrace, Upper Missouri River Valley of Montana: The Vertebrate Fauna

    Leslie B Davis, J Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•2000•Cited by: 4•References: 1

The nearly singular subsistence reliance by Late Prehistoric hunter-gatherers in the northwestern Plains on bison (Bison bison) is well-established. In a significant departure from that subsistence adaptation, a group of Avonlea Phase people occupying a floodplain of the upper Missouri River during late winter ca. 1200 radiocarbon years before present (RCYBP) procured a large number of pronghorn (Antilocapra americana). The excavated sample conta…

  • Stone Circles in the Montana Rockies: Relict Households and Transitory Communities

    Leslie B Davis•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1983

Archaeological investigations at the Pilgrim open-air habitation site (24BW675), conducted in 1979, 1980, 1981 , and 1982 on the elevated western margin of the Townsend Basin in southwestern Montana, led to excavation of 40 (55%) of the estimated 71 stone circles, two exterior features, and one rockpile. Artifacts and radiocarbon dates establish intermittent site occupation from Late Middle Prehistoric (Pelican Lake phase) into Late Prehistoric (…

    Leslie B Davis•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1966•Cited by: 2

This report is a follow up of the 1961 Kehoe-McCorquodale presentation in the Plains Anthrdpqlogist of the Avonlea point as a horizon marker for the Late Prehistoric Periood in the Northwestern Plains, Montana Avonlea data are discussed, compared and combined with Canadian data to develop an expanded picture of regional Avonlea “culture”. A critique of the kehoe-McCorquodale generalizations reinforces essential hypothesis and further clarifies Av…
