An Uncommon Instance of Egyptian Blue in the “Pigmented Intonachino” of the Fishpond Wall Painting From the Roman Villa of Torre di Pordenone (Northeast Italy)
The increasingly close integration of analytical techniques in the study of Greek and Roman wall paintings has shown that Egyptian blue was a common pigment, widely documented in the production of blue and greenish hues in ancient painted production. This study reports on a peculiar use of this synthetic pigment identified in wall‐painting fragments recovered from secondary deposits at the Roman villa of “Torre di Pordenone” (Friuli‐Venezia‐Giuli…
Production technique and multi-analytical characterization of a paint-plastered ceiling from the Late Antique villa of Negrar (Verona, Italy)
The research focuses on analyzing the production techniques and materials of a Roman paint-plastered ceiling from a Late Antique Roman villa near Negrar (Verona, Italy), recently uncovered. Stylistic features of the decoration, found in reworked collapse debris during the villa's excavation, date the ceiling to the original construction phase in the 4th century CE. The paper presents the protocol we adopted for recovering and analyzing the painte…
Wall paintings through the ages: The roman period-Republic and early Empire
This paper aims at presenting an overview of Roman wall painting production between late Republic and the early Empire. It will focus on the technique and style of in situ wall paintings from the Vesuvian area (Italy). Frescoes are indeed an integral part of architecture and reflect the patrons' ambitions and social level as well as the craftsmen's technical know-how. Since this is a handicraft product, the quality of materials, the craftsmen's s…

A partire dal 2007, l’Università degli Studi di Padova svolge campagne di scavo, presso il sito della Casa delle Bestie ferite. Per avvicinare il pubblico allo scavo “aperto”, la s…

The Evolution of the Vitruvian Recipes over 500 Years of Floor‐Making Techniques: The Case Studies of the Domus delle Bestie Ferite and the Domus di Tito Macro (Aquileia, Italy)
The paper reports the results of a research project aimed at the characterization of the floor bedding mortars of two Roman houses in Aquileia (north‐eastern Italy), the Domus delle Bestie Ferite and the Domus di Tito Macro. Seventy floor bedding mortars of the two domus were selected and almost half were fully minero‐petrographically characterized by means of optical microscopy operated in transmitted light (OM‐TL), X‐ray powder diffraction anal…

Kautsky and Weber: Common Problems and Different Approaches
Weber believed that the essence of Marxism's simplification consisted in conceiving of the superstructure as, in the last analysis, dependent on the base. And he regarded Kautsky as a typical representative of that Marxism against which his methodological critique was directed. For his part, Kautsky thought that Weber's most distinctive interpretations had the fault of overestimating the superstructural elements. Nevertheless, Kautsky had a deep …
From Orthodox Marxism to Parliamentary Democracy: New Interpretations of the German Social Democratic and Labour Movement, 1880-1933
THE HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE German labour movement has a tradition of more than a century. Yet not until the past 25 years has it received the scholarly attention it deserves. Until the 1950s the political, psychological, and methodological prerequisites for an impartial and differentiated examination were lacking. Today the history of organized labour in Germany is well on its way to becoming one of the most preferred areas of research in modern G…

A Look at Italian Democracy in 1956
years have gone by since the plebiscite of June 2, 1946, led to the proclamation of the Italian Republic, and the last King, Humbert II, left the country to take up residence at a pleasant resort near Lisbon. On the same day elections for a constituent assembly took place. Nearly two fifths of the votes went to marxist parties (the Communist Party and a Socialist Party dominated then, as in 1919, by fellow travelling massimalisti) which saw in th…
