  • Hide Bundle from the Blood Run Site (Iowa: (13Lo2)

    Jonathan E Reyman, Dale R Henning et al.•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•2004•Cited by: 1

(2004). Hide Bundle from the Blood Run Site (Iowa: 13LO2) Plains Anthropologist: Vol. 49, Memoir 36: Dhegihan and Chiwere Siouans in the Plains: Historical and Archaeological Perspectives, pp. 559-576

  • Changes During the Holocene in the Size of White-Tailed Deer ( Odocoileus virginianus ) from Central Illinois

    Open Access•James R Purdue•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1989

White-tailed deer ( Odocoileus virginianus ) from central Illinois varied in size during the Holocene. The record, which extends back to 8450 yr B.P., indicates small deer through the mid-Holocene until 3650 yr B.P., after which size increases. Although influences of winter climate, seasonality, anthropogenic effects, and other ecological factors should not be discounted, an intriguing possible cause of the deer size shifts is insolation-driven s…

  • On the Similarity of Odocoileus Hemionus And O. Virginianus Mandibles

    E Lin Buie, James R Purdue•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1986•Cited by: 1

Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA) was performed on 37 middle mandible variables of modern Odocoileus virginianus and Odocoileus hemionus specimens from Missouri and Wyoming, respectively, in order to distinguish their remains in zooarchaeological analyses. The Discriminant Function Analysis was applied to two archaeological deer samples, one from Missouri and the other from Illinois, to test for species composition. Due to the dynamic nature o…

  • Clinal Variation of Some Mammals During the Holocene in Missouri

    Open Access•James R Purdue•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1980

Eastern cottontail ( Sylvilagus floridanus ), fox squirrel ( Sciurus niger ), and gray squirrel ( Sciurus carolinensis ) were examined for clinal variation during the Holocene. Modern samples of all three species displayed strong east-west patterns along the western edge of the eastern deciduous forest: S. floridanus and S. niger decrease and S. carolinensis increases in size. Archeological samples of S. carolinensis from Rodgers Shelter (23BE125…

  • The Holocene Naiad Record at Rodgers Shelter in the Western Ozark Highland of Missouri

    Walter E Klippel, Gail Celmer et al.•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1978•Cited by: 5•References: 5

Freshwater mussels from Rodgers Shelter in the western Ozark Highland of Missouri have been identified and their place in the prehistoric subsistence economy assessed. Recent collections indicate that the present day naiad populations in the lower Pomme de Terre River are as diverse, if not more diverse, than prehistoric populations as reflected in the archaeological assemblage. When present day populations are used as an approximation of prehist…
