  • Recent Research on Obsidian from Missouri Archaeological Sites

    Terrell L Martin, Richard E Hughes et al.•ARTICLE•Midcontinental Journal of…•2016•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6

Obsidian has been noted at archaeological sites in the Midwest for over 160 years, although very few artifacts made from this material are recorded in archaeological contexts in Missouri. Background research revealed that only 16 obsidian artifacts from 13 sites had been documented from the state and that only 5 of the specimens had been geochemically analyzed and attributed to a source. Recent excavations at the Droste site (23PI1291), a Late Wo…

  • Early Woodland Black Sand Occupation in the Lower Missouri Valley, Western Missouri

    Terrell L Martin•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•2007•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 2

Archaeologists have long been concerned about the incomplete record of Early Woodland evidence in the Midwest. Many broad geographic areas have not even been superficially surveyed, much less systematically researched for evidence of early ceramic cultures, which include Marion and various Black Sand phases. The Missouri River drainage between St. Louis and Kansas City has been targeted as a significant regional gap (Farnsworth 1986a:2). Recent i…

  • Environmental Setting

    James M Collins, Terrell L Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•2003•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 3

This paper discusses evidence for the exchange networks that intersected through a late prehistoric site on the western margin of the Ozarks in Lawrence County, Missouri. The Dahlman site, 23LA259, was occupied during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries along the Spring River. The site consists of a collection of households in the floodplain and on a terrace overlooking the river. Materials recovered during two seasons of excavations have broug…

  • The Barrington Site

    Terrell L Martin•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•2001•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 1

Two artifact concentrations were discovered during the excavation of adjacent pit features at the Barrington site (23JE600-A) in eastern Missouri. The contents of Feature 1 included a fragmented cylindrical banners tone, a galena nodule, and a large side-notched point. Feature 2 yielded five projectile points of probable Early Archaic age, including two Hardin points, two Rice Lanceolate variants, and one St. Charles point. The features were less…
