  • Stratigraphy and geoarchaeology of the Red Canyon Rockshelter, Crook County, Wyoming

    Open Access•James T Abbott•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1997

Excavation of a sandstone rockshelter on the northwestern periphery of the Black Hills uplift in Crook County, Wyoming, revealed a sequence of culture-bearing deposits at least 5 m thick that span the last 6 millennia. Although archaeological strata are present throughout the sequence, artifact return from the shelter was low, and chemical and micromorphological analyses demonstrate that anthropic alterations of the sediments are limited. This in…

  • Archeological Testing of Sites 41WB437 and 41WB438 Webb County, Texas

    James T Abbott•ARTICLE•Index of Texas Archaeology Open…•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Archeological sites 41WB437 and 41WB438 are two prehistoric sites situated on opposing terraces of San Idelfonso Creek at the crossing of U.S. Highway 83, approximately 7.5 km south of Laredo, Texas, and 0.6 km upstream from the confluence of the stream and the Rio Grande River. Site 41 WB438 is characterized by a relatively dense accumulation of lithic debris and occasional groundstone fragments scattered across a broad alluvial terrace on the s…

  • Assessment of integrity and geochronology of archaeological sites using amino acid racemization in land snail shells

Open Access•G Lain Ellis, Gene Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1996

Detailed racemization analyses were carried out on samples of the land snail Rabdotus mooreanus from archaeological sites at Fort Hood, in central Texas. D-alloisoleucine/L-isoleucine (A/I) values were determined for 260 individual shells from 29 proveniences, including sites in alluvium, colluvium, and rockshelters, as well as burned rock middens. A/I values show a good correlation with radiocarbon age, and so provide reasonably precise estimate…

  • NRHP Significance Testing of 57 Prehistoric Archeological Sites on Fort Hood, Texas. Volume 2

    James T Abbott, W N Trierweiler et al.•REPORT•1995•Cited by: 1

This document presents the results and conclusions of archeological investigations on 57 prehistoric sites at Fort Hood in Bell and Coryell counties, Central Texas. The objective of the investigations was to test each site for eligibility for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), as is required in the current Historic Preservation Plan for Fort Hood. Site research potential was assessed with respect to research questions a…

  • Evolution of landscapes on the double mountain fork of the brazos river, West Texas

    Open Access•Michael D Blum, James T Abbott et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1992•References: 16

The Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River is an ephemeral stream that flows across the western Rolling Plains of West Texas. Intensive pedestrian archaeological survey, covering some 8700 acres of the drainage, produced a site inventory with a general paucity of identifiable Paleoindian and Early to Middle Archaic components, whereas Late Archaic and Late Prehistoric sites were widespread and found in a diversity of landscape positions. Geoarc…

  • Magnetic Prospection of Prehistoric Sites in an Alluvial Environment

    C Frederick, Charles D Frederick et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•1992•Cited by: 4•References: 14

Portable proton magnetometers were employed at a number of sites dating to the Archaic and Late Prehistoric periods at several different localities in NW and west-central Texas in an attempt to locate subsurface prehistoric features for excavation. Eight magnetic surveys were performed, resulting in the identification and recovery of several fired features, clusters of ceramics, and numerous metal objects of historical age. The results demonstrat…
