Investigating the human response to the medieval climate anomaly in the Nebraska Sand Hills: A preliminary study in building occupation histories with OSL dating
Multiple periods of dune activation triggered by drought have occurred within the Nebraska Sand Hills, the most recent period occurred during the medieval climate anomaly (MCA; A.D. 900–1350). We present a pilot study where we have successfully adapted a standard chronology-building tool, optically stimulated luminescence dating, to investigate the effects of dune reactivation on human occupation history at two sites conventionally dated to the p…
Years of environmental evolution of barrier–lagoon systems emplaced in coastal embayments (NW Iberia)
The rocky and indented coast of NW Iberia is characterized by the presence of highly valuable and vulnerable, small and shallow barrier–lagoon systems structurally controlled. The case study was selected to analyse barrier–lagoon evolution based on detailed sedimentary architecture, chronology, geochemical and biological proxies. The main objective is to test the hypothesis of structural control and the significance at regional scale of any high-…
Temporal and spatial variability in dune reactivation across the Nebraska Sand Hills, USA
The Nebraska Sand Hills is a stabilized dune field on the Great Plains of North America. Although it is well known that this dune field, like several others on the Great Plains, last experienced widespread activity during the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA, ~AD 900–1300), spatial variation in the timing and nature of drought development is poorly constrained. To elucidate spatial trends in dune reactivation, samples potentially representing MCA a…
Terrestrial sensitivity to abrupt cooling recorded by aeolian activity in northwest Ohio, USA
Optically stimulated luminescence dated sand dunes and Pleistocene beach ridges in northwest Ohio are used to reconstruct landscape modification more than 5000 yr after deglaciation. Four of the OSL ages (13.3–11.1 ka) cluster around the Younger Dryas cold event, five ages (10.8–8.2 ka) cluster around the Preboreal, one young age (0.9–0.7 ka) records more recent aeolian activity, and one age of 15.1–13.1 ka dates a barrier spit in Lake Warren. In…
Early Holocene dune activity linked with final destruction of Glacial Lake Minong, eastern Upper Michigan, USA
The early Holocene final drainage of glacial Lake Minong is documented by 21 OSL ages on quartz sand from parabolic dunes and littoral terraces and one radiocarbon age from a lake sediment core adjacent to mapped paleoshorelines in interior eastern Upper Michigan. We employ a simple model wherein lake-level decline exposes unvegetated littoral sediment to deflation, resulting in dune building. Dunes formed subsequent to lake-level decline prior t…
Archaeological Geology of the Mescalero Sands, Southeastern New Mexico
The Mescalero Sands accumulated in two episodes, first during the late Pleistocene (90,000 to 75,000 years B.P) and second during the early Holocene (9000 to 5000 years B.P) based on OSL dates. Archaeological sites of all ages occur on the surface of the older eolian sand Sites later than 3000 B.C. occur on the surface of the younger eolian sand, and sites older than 3000 B.C. are buried within the younger sand unit. Historic coppice and paraboli…
Late-Holocene dune activity linked to hydrological drought, Nebraska Sand Hills, USA
Dunefields of the Great Plains contain stratigraphic records of episodic Holocene aeolian activity, potentially providing a valuable record of climatic change. It has been dif” cult to establish unambiguous links between activity at speci” c sites and regional palaeoclimate, however. Here we demonstrate that widespread late-Holocene aeolian activity in the Nebraska Sand Hills, the largest dune” eld on the Great Plains of North America, occurred d…
Sources and paleoclimatic significance of Holocene Bignell Loess, central Great Plains, USA
This paper reexamines the stratigraphy, sources, and paleoclimatic significance of Holocene Bignell Loess in the central Great Plains. A broadly similar sequence of loess depositional units and paleosols was observed in thick Bignell Loess sections up to 300 km apart, suggesting that these sections record major regional changes in the balance between dust deposition and pedogenesis. New optical ages, together with previously reported radiocarbon …
