Abundance of the Eastern Chukchi Sea Stock of Beluga Whales, 2012 – 17
Aerial line transect surveys were conducted during 19 July – 20 August in each of the years 2012 – 17, with onshore – offshore transects covering a study area of approximately 110 000 km2, from 140 ̊ W to 157 ̊ W longitude and from shore to 72 ̊ N latitude. These data were used to estimate abundance of the eastern Chukchi Sea (ECS) stock of beluga whales. The data were stratified based on bathymetry to reflect strong large-scale gradients in belu…
Bowhead and Beluga Whale Distributions, Sighting Rates, and Habitat Associations in the Western Beaufort Sea in Summer and Fall 2009–16, with Comparison to 1982–91
We analyzed data from line-transect aerial surveys for marine mammals conducted in the western Beaufort Sea (shore to 72 ̊ N, 140 ̊–157 ̊ W) from July to October of 2009–16 to investigate the distribution, behaviors, sighting rates, and habitat use preferences of bowhead and beluga whales. The habitat use data allowed for direct comparison with data collected in the same area from 1982 to 1991. Both species are ice-adapted, migrating through lead…
Aerial Survey Estimates of Abundance of the Eastern Chukchi Sea Stock of Beluga Whales ( Delphinapterus leucas ) in 2012
The eastern Chukchi Sea (ECS) stock of beluga whales is one of three stocks in western Alaska that are co-managed by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Alaska Beluga Whale Committee. Abundance of this stock was estimated as 3710 in 1991 from incomplete data. Analysis of data from satellite-linked time-depth recorders (SDRs) attached to belugas in summer concentration areas of the ECS and Beaufort Sea (BS) stocks provided an overview of…
Bowhead and Gray Whale Distributions, Sighting Rates, and Habitat Associations in the Eastern Chukchi Sea, Summer and Fall 2009–15, with a Retrospective Comparison to 1982–91
We analyzed data from line-transect aerial surveys for marine mammals conducted in the eastern Chukchi Sea (67 ̊–72 ̊ N, 157 ̊–169 ̊ W) in July to October of 2009–15 to investigate bowhead and gray whale distributions, behaviors, sighting rates, and habitat selection preferences, the last of which allowed direct comparison with results from data collected in this area in 1982–91. Bowhead whales use the eastern Chukchi Sea primarily for migrating …
Bowhead whale autumn distribution and relative abundance in relation to oil and gas lease areas in the northeastern Chukchi Sea
Bowhead whales pass near or through offshore oil and gas lease areas in the northeastern Chukchi Sea during their westward migration each autumn. Results of aerial surveys conducted from mid-September through October 1982–1990 indicate that whale distribution overlapped lease area boundaries north and east of Point Barrow, Alaska. Bowhead relative abundance was high throughout the fall in nearshore sub-blocks east, north, and southwest of Point B…
Estimates of Bowhead Whale ( Balaena Mysticetus ) Numbers in the Beaufort Sea during Late Summer
Broad estimates of bowhead whale numbers in Beaufort Sea outer continental shelf (OCS) waters were calculated based on raw counts of whales seen during aerial surveys conducted in late summer 1982-84, corrected by factors accounting for surface area not sampled, surfaced whales missed by observers, and whales too deep to be seen. Annual estimates ranged from roughly 700-1200 to 3000-3500 whales for the latter half of August and from 2000-2200 to …
Bowhead Whales and acoustic seismic surveys in the Beaufort Sea
Seismic survey activities in the western Beaufort Sea, involving ships and sound production, were monitored in autumn 1982 for their possible effects on migrating Bowhead whales Balaena mysticetus . The study, begun in 1981 by die Minerals Management Service of the US Department of the Interior, covered offshore waters between the Alaskan coast and 72°N. Distribution, behaviour and numbers of whales were recorded, and procedures were established …
