  • Spatiotemporal connections in the Ross Sea

Open Access•D Fernandez, C Stevens et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2025

The Ross Sea, including its continental and ice shelf cavity areas, is a crucial part of the Southern Ocean known for its rich biodiversity as well as significant roles in deep water formation and sea-ice production. Over the past 5 decades, notable changes in sea ice, biology, biogeochemistry, and seawater composition have been observed, necessitating further research to understand the driving mechanisms and their ecological and climate impacts.…

  • Restoration of legacy contaminated sites in Antarctica

    Open Access•I Hawes, C Howard-Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2025•References: 42

The Antarctic Treaty System has put in place international agreements to provide comprehensive protection of the Antarctic environment. Despite this high degree of protection, human presence on the continent has resulted in environmental contamination, particularly at locations established prior to the development of the more stringent codes of conduct in recent decades. Rehabilitation of legacy contaminated sites is a priority for environmental …

  • Detecting Multi-Decadal Changes in Seagrass Cover in Tauranga Harbour, New Zealand, Using Landsat Imagery and Boosting Ensemble Classification Techniques

Open Access•Nam Thang Ha, Merilyn Manley-Harris et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2021

Seagrass provides a wide range of essential ecosystem services, supports climate change mitigation, and contributes to blue carbon sequestration. This resource, however, is undergoing significant declines across the globe, and there is an urgent need to develop change detection techniques appropriate to the scale of loss and applicable to the complex coastal marine environment. Our work aimed to develop remote-sensing-based techniques for detecti…

  • Nitrogen and carbon limitation of planktonic primary production and phytoplankton–bacterioplankton coupling in ponds on the McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica

    Open Access•Brian K Sorrell, I Hawes et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2013

The nature of nutrient limitation and coupling of planktonic primary and secondary production were investigated in meltwater ponds of the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica, using regression tree analysis and multiple regression. Phytoplankton were primaril N-limited but inorganic carbon apparently co-limited phytoplanton photosynthesis in some waters. Phytoplankton and bacterioplankton production were extremely closely linked, with no indication of any …

  • Submerged Aquatic Bryophytes in Colour Lake, a Naturally Acidic Polar Lake with Occasional Year-round Ice-cover

Open Access•I Hawes, Dale T Andersen et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2002

Colour Lake is a small, naturally acidic (pH 3.7) lake on Axel Heiberg Island (Canadian High Arctic) that experiences occasional year-round ice cover. We investigated the benthic vegetation of this lake, with a specific aim of determining whether the annual growth of benthic bryophytes reflects the state of summer ice cover. We found the bed of the lake to be almost completely covered by mosses or liverworts to a depth of 22 m. The mosses showed …
