  • Arctic Mission

    Open Access•Alfred S McLaren•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2013

a concluding note, she observes that in the 11 years during which this book was in the making, the situation in Kola has gone from bad to worse

  • Analysis of the Under-Ice Topography in the Arctic Basin as Recorded by the USS Nautilus during August 1958

    Open Access•Alfred S McLaren•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1988

The USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the first vessel to cross the Arctic Basin via the North Pole in early August 1958. During this expedition almost continuous acoustic under-ice thickness distribution profiles were recorded. This article presents an overall statistical analysis of the under-ice draft measurements obtained during this historic cruise. Geographic areas found to have distinct under-ice-characteristics and ice compositions are identifie…

  • The Sea Ice Topography of M'Clure Strait in Winter and Summer of 1960 from Submarine Profiles

Open Access•Alfred S McLaren, Peter Wadhams et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1984

Submarine profiles of the ice underside in M'Clure Strait were obtained by USS Sargo in February 1960 and by USS Seadragon in August 1960. They gave the first quantitative measurements of the ice draft distribution in the strait and in the nearby Beaufort Sea shelf zone, as well as providing a seasonal comparison of ice conditions within a single year. Analysis of the profiles reveals a region of very high mean ice draft (7.8 m) and heavy ridging…

  • Transporting Arctic petroleum

    Open Access•Alfred S McLaren•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1984•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Following a review of commercially-viable offshore oil deposits in northern Canada, Alaska and Greenland, the author explores alternative possibilities currently under consideration for transporting the oil to centres where it will be used. Hazards of pipeline construction, particularly under water, and the problems and dangers associated with giant surface tankers and projected giant submarines are discussed. The author concludes that convention…

  • The development of cargo submarines for polar use

    Open Access•Alfred S McLaren•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1983•Cited by: 2•References: 4

The United States and Canada, like other northern industrial nations, are under considerable economic pressures to develop their indigenous resources of oil and natural gas. Incentives for exploration and development are provided by increases in the price of fuels on world markets and political instability in the Middle East, the major alternative source of supply. The Arab oil embargo of 1973–74 quadrupled prices per barrel from US$3.00 to US$12…
