Northernmost land in the world re-confirmed
Since the 1978 discovery of an islet “Oodaaq Island” north of Greenland, then considered to be the northernmost island in the world, multiple islets have been reported and apparently disappeared with regular intervals in the permanent sea ice-covered area offshore the northernmost part of Greenland. In this paper, we report results of comprehensive investigations at all quoted positions of reported islets, with bathymetry measurements, as well as…
International access to research infrastructure in the Arctic
Reliable access to Arctic research infrastructure is critical to the future of polar science. In cultivating proposals, it is essential that researchers have a deep understanding of existing platforms when selecting the appropriate research site and experimental design for projects. However, Arctic infrastructure platforms are often funded as national assets, and choices for what would be the best platform for the project are sometimes at odds wi…
Environmental Changes in the North Atlantic Region
New observations on the relative sea level and deglacial history of Greenland from Innaarsuit, Disko Bugt
Relative sea level (RSL) data derived from isolation basins at Innaarsuit, a site on the south shores of the large marine embayment of Disko Bugt, West Greenland, record rapid RSL fall from the marine limit (ca. 108 m) at 10,300–9900 cal yr B.P. to reach the present sea level at 3500 cal yr B.P. Since 2000 cal yr B.P., RSL rose ca. 3 m to the present. When compared with data from elsewhere in Disko Bugt, our results suggest that the embayment was…
Role of landscape parameters in riverine run-off, and sediment and organic matter yield on Disko Island, West Greenland
Measurements of discharge and suspended sediment and organic matter yield from nine different drainage basins on the island Disko in central West Greenland were carried out in the period 19–30 July 1997. A series of landscape properties (glacier cover, altitude, slope, aspect and vegetation cover) were measured for each drainage basin from a digital elevation model and a satellite image. Principal Component Analysis and regression statistics have…
Investigation of a modern glacimarine sedimentary environment in the fjord Kuannersuit Sulluat, Disko, West Greenland
A 56 cm long sediment core from Kuannersuit Sulluat, a fjord on the island Disko, West Greenland is used to infer modern sedimentation rates and describe the sedimentary environment. The fjord abuts a catchment area dominated by a recently surging glacier (1995–1999). Analyses of the core included magnetic susceptibility, x-radiographs and grain size analysis. From these analyses it is concluded that deposition takes place both through sediment s…

A Compilation of Radiocarbon Dates from Disko Bugt, Central West Greenland/Meteorological Observations in 1996 at the Arctic Station, Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn), Central West Greenland/A Discussion on Pin…
188 new and previously published radiocarbon dates on Holocene material from Disko Bugt, central West Greenland, are presented together with relevant informations (laboratory number, place name, dated material, geografic coordinates, altitude and δ13C-value) about the dates. In October 1990 an automatic weather station was established at the Arctic station (65 °15′N,53 °31′W), Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn), Central West Greenland. The Station register p…
Geomorphology and Sedimentary Record of Three Cuspate Forelands as Indicators of Late Holocene Relative Sea-level Changes, Disko, West Greenland
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 97: 33–46, 1997. The coastal geomorphology of three cuspate forelands at Saqqarliit Ilorliit, western Disko, West Greenland is described, sediment core data from salt marshes and lagoons are presented, an emergence curve is constructed, and data are discussed in relation to late Holocene relative sea-level (RSL) changes. On western Disko, falling RSL in early-middle Holocene was followed by risin…
Meteorological Observations in 1995 at the Arctic Station, Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn), Central West Greenland/Concentrational Agriculture
In October 1990 an automatic meteorological station was established at the Arctic Station (69°15'N, 53°31'W), Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn), Central West Greenland, The station register parameters each 20 min, and the parameters have been described in an earlier paper in this journal by Nielsen et al. (1995). The present paper summarises main points of the climate during 1995. Concentrational agriculture, defined as types of agriculture based on local c…
Varves in a Proglacial Lake, Sermilik, South East Greenland/Meterological Observations at Arctic Station, Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn), Central West Greenland/Den Danske Nationalkomité for Geografi 1994–95
Danish Journal of Geography 95: 92–96, 1995. Three cores collected from a proglacial lake with an Axelsson corer are x-rayed. The stratification is interpreted as varves. The cores cover periods of sedimentation with a duration from 5—23 years. The average thickness of the varves vary from 1.9—20.0 mm indicating a tenfold variation in the sedimentation rate. Geografisk Tidsskrift 96: 97–104, 1995. In October 1990 a new automatic meteorological st…

Variations of Spacings between Beach Cusps discussed in relation to Edge Wave Theory
Rasch, Morten, Jørgen Nielsen & Niels Nielsen: Variations of Spacings between Beach Cusps discussed in relation to Edge Wave Theory. Geografisk Tidsskrift 93:49–55. Copenhagen 1993. Variations in cusp spacings of beach cusp systems have been examined, and the conclusion is that the apparent regularity of the spacings is not always real. Established edge wave theory predicts equal cusp spacings, and accordingly, the theory needs to be improved or …
