Execution rates in Scottish witchcraft trials
This article estimates the total executions in Scottish witchcraft trials by using stratified sampling methods and random samples. The Scottish witchcraft trials took place in the period 1560–1727, and court records from these trials are preserved. However, the completeness of the source material varies. Information about these trials is registered in a data base: The Survey of Scottish Witchcraft. Out of the historical sources preserved, of a to…
Institution-based roots to fishing vessels profitability
In fisheries, formal institutions are intentionally implemented to protect the stock of fish and to better adjust the fleet’s catch capacity to the resource base. The present study, however, explores how the same institutions also influence competitive forces that shape industry attractiveness and the profitability of fishing boats. The empirical context is a sample of Norwegian seagoing purse seiners during a period that saw the introduction of …
Strategic investments in catch capacity and quotas
Despite improved fisheries management, overcapacity is still a major issue in fisheries worldwide. This study investigates the economic effect of a mismatch between catch capacity and quota holdings on the economic performance of fishing boats operating in a system of Individual Fishing Quota (IFQ) system. Based on the data of 71 fishing vessels, which constitute the entire fleet of Norwegian seagoing purse seiners, an ordinal least squares model…
Oil exploration and sea ice projections in the Arctic
The aim of this study is to investigate how reduction in the sea ice cover may affect oil activity in the Arctic during the next 30 years. The Arctic is divided into 21 oil provinces. A multidisciplinary approach is applied drawing on both the comparative cost techniques as developed in location theory and sea ice cover projections. The comparative cost technique implies a systematic listing of cost differentials by oil provinces. The sea ice pro…
