  • Ice processes and growth history on Arctic and sub-Arctic lakes using ERS-1 SAR data

    Open Access•K Morris, Martin O Jeffries et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1995•References: 13

A survey of ice growth and decay processes on a selection of shallow and deep sub-Arctic and Arctic lakes was conducted using radiometrically calibrated ERS-1 SAR images. Time series of radar backscatter data were compiled for selected sites on the lakes during the period of ice cover (September to June) for the years 1991–92 and 1992–93. A variety of lake-ice processes could be observed, and significant changes in backscatter occurred from the t…

  • The Polar Oceans Program of the Alaska SAR Facility

Open Access•W F Weeks, Gunter Weller et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1991

The science plan for the Alaska SAR Facility (ASF) focuses on earth surface characteristics that are of interest within the overall concept of global change and that show significant regional, seasonal and interannual variations resulting in changes in the strength of their radar returns. The polar oceans, with the continuous motion and deformation of the pack ice and the changes in the surface state of the surrounding open seas, offer excellent …

  • Structure of a Multi-Year Pressure Ridge

    Open Access•A Kovacs, W F Weeks et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1973

Three transverse profiles across a large pressure ridge located in the Beaufort Sea are presented. The ridge sail extended 4m. above sea level and the ridge keel 13 m. below. The cross-sections of the ridge keel can be described as roughly semi-circular. This suggests that form drag coefficients for flow transverse to the long axes of multi-year ridges may be as high as 0.8. Examination of several salinity, temperature and brine-volume profiles s…

  • Antarctic icebergs as a fresh water resource

    Open Access•W F Weeks, W J Campbellf•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1973•Cited by: 1•References: 1

In a recent study (Weeks and Campbell, in press), we made a rather complete examination of the idea that icebergs could advantageously be used as a source of fresh water. The origin of the general idea of transporting icebergs is obscure; it may date from the 1850's when ice was transported from Alaska to California as a commercial venture. The current revival of the idea, in particular as applied to the water problems of southern California, can…

  • Ice Exploration in Antarctica

    Geoffrey Hattersley-Smith, Anthony J Gow et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1970

  • The Salinity Distribution in Young Sea-Ice

    Open Access•W F Weeks, O S Lee•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1962

When undertaking a study of the lateral variation of the salinity of sea-ice it is necessary to select an area of ice with a known history. The field measurements reported here were made in North Star Bay, Thule, northwestern Greenland .... The sampling for the sheet ice grid was started at 1100 on November 6 and by 2100 the 2-, 4-, 8- and 16-foot grids were completed. The 32-, 64- and 128-foot grids were completed the following morning. ... Samp…

  • United States sea ice physics project, 1954–59

    Open Access•W F Weeks•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1959•References: 2

In 1954 the Geophysics Research Directorate of the Air Force Cambridge Research Center (AFCRC), at the request of Northeast Air Command, United States Air Force, organized a study of the physical properties, growth, and bearing capacity of sea ice. The object of the study was to gain information about the conditions under which various aircraft and vehicles could operate on sea ice, for supply and rescue purposes. The Navy Hydrographic Office (NH…
