CO 2 and Pourquoi-Pas
During the explorations of Pourquoi-Pas? , commanded by Jean Baptiste Charcot, in the Southern Ocean in the period 1908–1910, Ensign R.-E. Godfroy collected, between latitudes 64°09'S and 70°05'S, eleven samples of air, according to instructions given by Muntz and Luné (1911) for measuring the concentrations of CO 2 in the atmosphere. The samples were later analysed in the laboratories of the Conservatoire des Arts et Metiers, Paris using basical…
Some reflections on the Antarctic Treaty
2009 brings not only the 50th anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty but also the end of the International Geophysical Year (IGY) and of its extension into the period of International Geophysical Cooperation (IGC 1959). It is also the 133rd anniversary of K. Weyprecht's suggestion that initiated the impetus. As he noted, ‘if Polar Expeditions are looked upon merely as a sort of international steeple-chase . . . and their main object is to exceed by …
Chile, the International Geophysical Year, and the Antarctic
This note draws attention to the fact the formal motion presented at the first International Geophysical Year (IGY) Antarctic Conference, recommending that the aims of the conference were exclusively scientific was proposed by the Chilean delegation
The first International Polar Year (1882–1883)
During the first International Polar Year (1882–1883) the French expedition to Bahia Orange, Hoste Island, Tierra del Fuego carried out a series of 39 measurements of concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. These were supplemented by 6 measurements during the return voyage to Cherbourg. In addition 20 similar measurements were made at 4 stations in the northern hemisphere and 17 at 3 stations in the southern hemisphere that were parti…

A Century of International Interdisciplinary Co-operation
1982–1983 is the centenary of the first International Polar Year which began on 1 August 1882. It is also the 50th anniversary of the second International Polar Year and the 25th anniversary of the third – the International Geophysical Year. Each of these Years provided a stimulus to geophysics, to international co-operation and to increased scientific interest in the polar zones. Although there had been earlier co-operative studies in science, t…
The first International Polar Year, 1882–83
Karl Weyprecht has left an unforgettable record of polar exploration, but has himself tended to be forgotten. His fame rests not so much with his work in the Arctic, which included the discovery of Zemlya Frantsa-Iosifa, but on the series of international scientific programmes which he initiated in 1875 with the first International Polar Year (IPY), 1882–83. International scientific programmes can be traced back to 1751, when observations of the …
