Student Experiences With Peer Review and Revision for Writing-to-Learn in a Chemistry Course Context
Peer review is useful for providing students with formative feedback, yet it is used less frequently in STEM classrooms and for supporting writing-to-learn (WTL). While research indicates the benefits of incorporating peer review into classrooms, less research is focused on students’ perceptions thereof. Such research is important as it speaks to the mechanisms whereby peer review can support learning. This study examines students’ self-reported …
The Mixed Methods Practical Sustainability Research Framework
With a rising world population and pressure on ecosystems due to development, researchers need sophisticated and integrated approaches for conducting sustainability research. We outline a mixed methods practical sustainability research framework, defined as an equal-priority social–ecological methodology, whereby both community engagement and integrated biodiversity assessments are constructed to identify sustainability trade-offs. We illustrate …
Linking tourism and art in Canada's eastern Arctic
The Inuit of Canada's eastern Arctic are increasingly turning to tourism as a source of much-needed income and employment. The government of the Northwest Territories, in conjunction with local communities, is attempting to develop a ‘sustainable’ form of tourism in the region, with an emphasis on maximizing local economic linkages while minimizing negative socio-cultural and environmental impacts. One key strategy for increasing the ‘downstream’…
Industrial Restructuring and the Future of the Small Firm
The dramatic flourishing of small-scale enterprise in recent years has stimulated a great deal of academic interest. Indeed many researchers have given the small firm pride of place in theories designed to explain the growth of a new, more 'flexible', economic environment. Recently, however, commentators have questioned whether these analyses are perhaps not overly optimistic in the role they ascribe to small firms. We add to the debate through a…
Small Firms, Industrial Reorganisation, and Space
In recent years a series of persuasive arguments have been developed that describe the growth of new industrial spaces. This new geography of production is seen to stem from the attempts of companies to respond to a new, more flexible, marketplace by becoming more vertically disintegrated through a reliance on a series of dense transactional supply and innovation linkages with spatially proximate firms. To date, much of the debate about these pro…
New Forms of Manufacturing and Their Spatial Implications
Findings from a recent survey of the introduction of new manufacturing techniques in the UK electronic consumer goods (ECG) industry are presented. ECG firms operate in an environment characterised by intense global competition, rapidly changing consumer demand, shortened product life cycles, and the pervasive impact of new technologies. In response to these pressures firms are forced to operate in both an efficient and a highly flexible manner. …
