  • The East German East Antarctic Expedition, 1979–80

    Open Access•F I Norman•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2004

A once-restricted report dealing with the first (and only) official East German Antarctic expedition to Prydz Bay, East Antarctica, is discussed. Members of ‘die Ergebnisse der DDR-Erkundungsexpedition’ (EREX 79/80) were in the Larsemann Hills during the 1979–80 season. From ground (17 January) and aerial examination (17 January, 8 February), a site on eastern Broknes was selected for a future station; proposed facilities and some EREX observatio…

  • Klarius Mikkelsen's landing site

    Open Access•F I Norman, John A E Gibson et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2002•References: 6

Further details regarding the landing made by Klarius Mikkelsen in the Tryne Islands, Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica, are given, being derived mainly from newspaper accounts made by Leif S0rsdal. All involved in the landing on 20 February 1935 have been identified, details of material left in the depot under the raised flag are given, and more extended information relating to the voyage to and from the site and the area generally are presented. …

  • Adélie penguin colonies in eastern Prydz Bay

    Open Access•F I Norman•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Temporally and spatially increasing information on the distribution of Adélie penguin ( Pygoscelis adeliae ) breeding sites is used as an index of various national activities in eastern Prydz Bay, East Antarctica. Recorded instances of such sites are used to indicate both exploration and enhanced local knowledge. While Norwegians discovered the area (1935), and revisited it (1937), reports of penguins were minimal. The 1938 Ellsworth expedition a…

  • Klarius Mikkelsen's 1935 landing in the Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica

    Open Access•F I Norman, John A E Gibson et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1998•Cited by: 3•References: 8

Exploratory activities of Norwegians, particularly those directed by Lars Christensen, off eastern Antarctica are discussed briefly in relation to contemporary Antarctic investigations and politics. The interests of Norway there and Christensen's role in establishing an understanding of the local coastline are indicated. Particular attention is paid to the landing made by Klarius Mikkelsen in the Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica, on 20 February 19…

  • Human influences on breeding of south polar skuas in the eastern Larsemann Hills, Princess Elizabeth Land, East Antarctica

    Open Access•Z Wang, F I Norman et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Breeding activity of pairs of south polar skuas ( Catharacta maccormicki ) in the eastern Larsemann Hills, Princess Elizabeth Land, East Antarctica, was recorded in five of six austral summers between 1988 and 1994. More detailed observations of breeding success were made in the 1989/90 and 1993/94 summers. Although relatively few skuas nest in the study area, data suggest that there was inter-annual variation in numbers and locations of territor…
