Attractiveness of municipal districts for internal migrants
The main demographic problem facing the authorities of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is the imbalance between the external and internal migration flows. This imbalance resulted from the structural heterogeneity of spatial development. Thus, I analyzed the economic zones mentioned in official documents and the clusters obtained through Ward's method. Nevertheless, internal migration – currently the main form of migration – merits special attenti…
Internal migration in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)
The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) faces serious demographic challenges. One of the most important among them is the imbalance of population flows within internal migration. This paper examines the patterns of internal migration in the Republic, based on the distribution of municipal districts (uluses) by economic zones designated by the authorities for administrative purposes. The six most common indices characterising the intensity of migration of…
Spatial and Climatic Patterns of Intraregional Migration in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)
This study investigates the impact of the geographical location of uluses (municipal districts) and their climate on intraregional migration in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Six of the most common indices describing the intensity of migration were used for the analysis. Despite strong outflows of population from the north, the disparities between the Arctic uluses and the rest of the Republic were statistically insignificant. Disparities betwe…
Economic Consequences of Changes in Russia’s Age Distribution During Demographic Waves
The current changes in ratio of Russia's main socioeconomic groups (working-age, youth, and elderly) are adversely impacting the country's economic development. The purpose of this article is to reflect these changes during a demographic wave. To that end, we use official statistics and predicted population changes up to the year 2050. Our analysis shows that the number and share of the working-age population will decline, the elderly population …
Assessment of the intensity and directions of population movement in the regions of the Arctic zone of Russia in 1991–2000
Socio-economic transformations greatly worsened the state of the Arctic regions for residents, which led to a decrease in the population due to the significant migration outflow. Using the balance of the population movement based on data from Rosstat, we estimated the intensity of migratory movement (relocation to permanent residence) and the natural movement of the population, along with the directions of incoming movement and attrition of the p…
Fertility Rates in Russian Regions
The paper analyzes changes in fertility rates recorded across the federal districts and regions of Russia over the period from 1990 to 2014. The analysis was based on β- and σ-convergence. It has been shown that differences in fertility rates tended either to decrease or increase in the considered period and were associated with specific events in the country’s socioeconomic development. The patterns were similar at the level of federal districts…
