Erich H. Follmann (1943–2010)
Albert Lincoln Washburn (1911–2007)
the first executive director of the Arctic Institute of North America (from 1945 to 1950), died in Seattle on January 30, 2007, at the age of 95. "Link," as his friends knew him, loved the Arctic. He dedicated his life to fieldwork and to intensive study of the Arctic and the polar regions in general, focusing on glacial and periglacial environments and Quaternary history of the earth. All of his research had the common thread of understanding pe…
Fifty Years of McCall Glacier Research
McCall Glacier, located in the eastern Brooks Range of northern Alaska (Fig. 1), has the longest and most com-plete history of scientific research of any glacier in the U.S. Arctic. Spanning the period from the International

The College Hill Chronicles
The role of air pollution in Arctic planning and development
The very low population densities in the Arctic and sub-Arctic, and the apparently rugged physical environment, tend to minimize one's conception of the possible effect of man's activities in these regions. In fact, of course, populations concentrate in fewer centres than in warmer regions: more than half the population of the Yukon Territory lives within 30 km of Whitehorse, and more than half Alaska's is associated with Fairbanks and Anchorage.…
Glaciological Studies on Mount Wrangell, Alaska, 1961
Measurements of temperature, density, hardnesss and stratigraphic profiles were made in the upper 10 m of the snow cover in the caldera and an adjacent snow-filled crater. Facies parameters calculated for the summit area, 4000-4300 m at 62 degrees N, compare well with the same parameters near the dry-snow line on the Greenland ice sheet. This comparison is part of the purpose of the Mt Wrangell study within the framework of the "hypothetical North…
