  • Environmental Change and Potential Impacts

Open Access•Bill Streever, Robert Suydam et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2011

"Appropriate management requires information that can be gained only through applied research. We provide a brief history of applied research on the North Slope, introduce the North Slope Science Initiative (NSSI) as an organization tasked with improving the coordination of science across the region, and posit applied science priorities that are essential for successful and informed management."

  • Amchitka Island, Alaska

    Open Access•Jennifer L Benning, David L Barnes et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2009•Referências: 23

Amchitka Island, Alaska, is a historical underground nuclear test site. Three underground tests were conducted there by the United States Atomic Energy Commission, now US Department of Energy (USDOE), between 1965 and 1971. These were Long Shot, an 80 kiloton detonation; Milrow, a 1 megaton detonation; and Cannikin, a 5 megaton detonation. Subsequent to these tests, several scientific assessments have been conducted regarding the impacts of the t…

  • Environmental Radiocesium in Subarctic and Arctic Alaska Following Chernobyl

Open Access•M Baskaran, John J Kelley et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1991

Radiocesium (134Cs and 137Cs) concentrations were measured in soil, plant and wildlife samples from subarctic to arctic Alaska. Concentrations of 137Cs ranged from below detectable or low levels in whale and fish samples to as high as 242 Bq/kg in lichen. For all potential human food items, the radiocesium concentrations measured in this study were below accepted permissible levels for human consumption. Chernobyl-derived radiocesium concentratio…

  • Physical Processes at the Surface of the Arctic Tundra

    Open Access•John J Kelley, D F Weaver et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1969

The results of measurements of net total radiation flux and temperatures in the air and surface layers of the tundra and snow near Barrow, Alaska, are presented for the period September 1965 to September 1966. Lowest average monthly temperatures occurred in March, the highest in July. The minimum average net total radiation occurred in January with the maximum in July. The tundra surface began to thaw by 18 June and to freeze by September
