  • Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks’ (Saon) Roadmap for Arctic Observing and Data Systems (Roads)

Open Access•Sarah Starkweather, Jan René Larsen et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2022

Arctic observing and data systems have been widely recognized as critical infrastructures to support decision making and understanding across sectors in the Arctic and globally. Yet due to broad and persistent issues related to coordination, deployment infrastructure and technology gaps, the Arctic remains among the most poorly observed regions on the planet from the standpoint of conventional observing systems. Sustaining Arctic Observing Networ…

  • Multipurpose Acoustic Networks in the Integrated Arctic Ocean Observing System

Open Access•Peter N Mikhalevsky, Hanne Sagen et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2015

The dramatic reduction of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean will increase human activities in the coming years. This activity will be driven by increased demand for energy and the marine resources of an Arctic Ocean accessible to ships. Oil and gas exploration, fisheries, mineral extraction, marine transportation, research and development, tourism, and search and rescue will increase the pressure on the vulnerable Arctic environment. Technologies that …

  • Winter navigation in the Northern Sea Route using Radarsat data

Open Access•Vitali Yu Alexandrov, Stein Sandven et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2000•References: 1

The results are presented of the first winter ice navigation demonstration, using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images from the Canadian satellite RADARSAT, onboard the nuclear icebreaker Sovetskiy Soyuz in the Kara Sea region in April–May 1998. While ERS SAR data only could cover part of the sea ice in this large area, the demonstration showed that RADARSAT ScanSAR images with 100 m pixel size could be used to map all relevant ice areas with a …
