The Role of Paraglacial and Periglacial Processes in Shaping Glacial Valleys
Are U-shaped valleys, long regarded as the exclusive result of glacial erosion, significantly shaped by processes occurring during interglacial periods? This study challenges conventional glacial geomorphology by quantifying the sedimentary contributions of interglacial sequences.Focusing on the Nesdalur valley in Iceland's Westfjords—a U-shaped valley sculpted by repeated glaciation-deglaciation cycles and marked by its Tertiary basalt structure…
The development of Kangiqsualujjuaq and the threat of snow avalanches in a permafrost degradation context, Nunavik, Canada
Slope processes are active in the rolling plateau landscapes of Nunavik, Northern Québec, Canada. There are a few short but very steep escarpments in this region. On January 1st, 1999 a powerful snow avalanche struck Kangiqsualujjuaq, one of the 14 Inuit villages in Nunavik. Nine people died and 25 were injured. This village and its surrounding are located within a glacial valley, in a periglacial environment. There is significant population grow…
Development of a subarctic peatland linked to slope dynamics at Lac Wiyâshâkimî (Nunavik, Canada)
A palaeoecological study of a subarctic minerotrophic peatland was undertaken to reconstruct the formation of the site as an archive of slope geomorphological processes. The study peatland is located about 400 m from Caribou slope (unofficial name) on Lepage Island, Lac Wiyâshâkimî, Nunavik (northern Québec, Canada). The site is close to the lakeshore and receives runoff directly from Caribou slope and its catchment. Gravity processes have been a…
A century-long snow avalanche chronology reconstructed from tree-rings in Parâng Mountains (Southern Carpathians, Romania)
An early Holocene age for the Vatn landslide (Skagafjörður, central northern Iceland)
Recent research in northern Iceland has highlighted a significant period of rock slope instability during the early Holocene due to the combined effects of postglacial rebound, relative sea-level fall, and glacially oversteepened mountain slopes. Using the Vatn landslide (Skagafjörður, central northern Iceland) as an example, this paper focuses on this period and describes the sequence of events that led to landsliding. Geomorphic mapping, strati…
A multi-scale resolution of snow-avalanche activity based on geomorphological investigations at Fnjóskadalur, northern Iceland
The article describes investigations that highlight snow-avalanche events that have not been reported in historical records. While historical sources are most often the basis for all natural hazard and risk research, alternative methods based on geomorphic investigations are often neglected. Here, we emphasise the use of geomorphic evidence to improve our knowledge of the maximum runout distance reached by snow avalanches as well as the frequency…
The Höfðahólar rock avalanche (sturzström)
The Höfðahólar rock avalanche, in the Skagafjörður area of northern Iceland, was investigated on the basis of a geomorphological analysis of its landforms and close surrounding environment. Thanks to sound chronological constraints ( 14 C dating from birch remnants in peat areas that developed within depressions over the chaotic rock-avalanche deposit, tephrochronological sequences resulting from subsequent ash fallouts over the deposit, calibrat…
