Working the Image
The use of visual methodologies within the area of qualitative research has seen a marked shift over the last century. These changes have been driven by a variety of factors: the development of camera technologies, approaches to visual research, increasing attention to the ethics of image-making and circulation, among others. In this chapter, we articulate some significant shifts in visual methodologies related to camera technologies, approaches …
Letters of Love
This article examines the role of memory and remembering in qualitative research, proposing a reflective practice where memories serve not only as a backdrop but as active participants in shaping inquiry. By revisiting and engaging in remembering, we, as qualitative inquirers, forge deeper connections with subjects, encompassing the human, the natural world, and the more-than-human. Drawing inspiration from Bridges-Rhoads et al.’s invitation to e…
Imagining home
This paper responds to the works of photographers dealing with questions of diaspora, home, and belonging in the context of South Asia. I offer a close reading of the works and practices of Mahtab Hussain, a British-Kashmiri artist, by placing his photographs and practices in conversation with the work of scholars in the field of diaspora studies and educational research. Hussain's photographic work offers a curriculum: a rewriting, a creation, a…
Image Technologies and Visual Methodologies
More images have been made and circulated in the last decade than in all of the 20th century. This is a startling yet obvious fact that illustrates the central role that images have come to play in contemporary life. However, technological changes in image-based practices have outpaced methodological responses to these transformations. In this article, I reflect on some of the drastic transformations that have occurred over the last two decades w…
Generating New Narratives
This paper examines the multiliteracies practices () of 20 high school students who participated in a weeklong summer research institute at the start of a 6-month-long community-based youth participatory action research (YPAR) initiative. Data analyzed included 20 digital multimodal compositions produced by youths, individual interviews with youths, and observations of youths’ participation in the YPAR initiative. Data analysis utilized theories …
UrbanAndMakingIt
The purpose of this study was to analyze the narratives constructed by urban youth in a summer program for future educators of color. In particular, we asked, “In what ways do students use texts to create counternarratives of urban education?” Utilizing visual counternarratives and counterstorytelling as theoretical frames, and through thematic analysis and visual amalgamated findings, we examined how students’ written, visual, and audio texts co…
Shifting the Frame
In this article, I focus on the relationship between photography and educational research, situating this conversation at the interstices of fact/fiction, indexical/imaginary, and art/data. I ask: How has our understanding and use of photography, the camera, and the photographer been shaped by the field of qualitative research? What possibilities exist for reimagining the role of photography in educational research and practice? Drawing on a dive…
Examining Teach For All
Examining Teach for All: International Perspectives on a Growing Global Network (eds: Matthew Thomas, Emilee Rauschenberger, and Katherine Crawford-Garrett) is a timely response to the rapid growth

A Comparative Case Study of Public Pre-K Teachers' Enactment of Parent Involvement Policy
This article employs the comparative case study (CCS) approach to examine how four public pre-kindergarten (pre-K) teachers in Michigan enacted a state-mandated parent involvement policy. Using CCS, we trace policy enactment from the policy text, through mid-level administrators, and into the classroom context. We demonstrate how teachers used strategic knowledge to develop hybrid parent involvement practices that satisfied program requirements w…
Beyond Damage-Centered Teacher Education
Background/Context In our best efforts to increase preservice teachers’ critical consciousness regarding the historical and contemporary inequities in the P–12 educational system and equip them to embody pedagogies and practices that counter those inequities, teacher educators often provide curricular and field experiences that reinforce the deficit mindsets that students bring to the teacher education classroom. For many social justice-oriented …
