  • Dream Scintillations

    Leon J Saul•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1965

Subjective episodes which seem to be the same as those termed “dream scintillations” by Forbes were experienced by the author. Except in two instances, these episodes immediately followed rather strenuous exercise; in only one did the emotional forces seem strong enough to play a causative role. The episodes last about 20 minutes and consist of dream-like images which occur in addition to the usual stream of consciousness, do not interfere with i…

  • Psychosocial Medicine and Observation of Animals

    Leon J Saul•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1962

Because animals act out their motivations, a great deal can be learned from observing their daily living that helps us to understand human personality, its development and problems. It-is now urgent to think in terms of prevention of psychosomatic disorders, in which emotional tensions have chiefly internal effects, and of psychosocial disorders, in which these tensions, especially hostility at the expense of love, are acted out

  • Respiration and Personality--a Preliminary Report

    Franz Alexander, Leon J Saul•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1940

A study has been undertaken of respiratory tracings with special references to psychological correlations. We use an ordinary metabolism apparatus, with very low resistance to respiration, and enlarged so as to be able to include the vital capacity on the same tracing. In describing the curves we consider rate, depth, respiratory level, rounding of tips, "hooks, " "squares" (breath-holding) and "spikes." Averages for the Institute group are given…

  • Some Observations on the Relations of Emotions and Allergy

    Leon J Saul•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1941

On the basis of studies now available on the roôle of emotions in allergic symptoms, the working hypothesis is presented that states of repressed, intense frustrated longing are of central importance. This was found in studies of certain cases of common cold, asthma, hay fever, and urticaria. The choice of sites for the symptoms seems to be determined by more specific factors. But whatever the factors in the choice of site for the symptom, the re…

  • The Emotional Settings of some Attacks of Urticaria

    Leon J Saul, CLARENCE BERNSTEIN•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1941

A young woman with intense longings for love was unable to satisfy these desires by a normal sexual relationship with a man because of her fears and inhibitions. She developed urticaria at times when her longings were especially stimulated and frustrated. Twelve attacks were observed during analysis and their emotional settings are described. Eight of them occurred in connection with dreams. These dreams invariably ended on the verge of frustrati…

  • Psychological Factors in Combat Fatigue

    Leon J Saul•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1945

The combat fatigue syndrome of anxiety, irritability, startle, insomnia and nightmares represents a common nucleus which can be distinguished from the innumerable individual differences of reaction which result from the individual differences in the personalities. This common nucleus is the emergency physiological mobilization for fight or flight with its psychological concomitants. This produces persisting symptoms rather than merely aiding figh…

  • Psychiatric Treatment of Peptic Ulcer Patients

    Leon J Saul•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1946

In the light of these cases, it is now feasible to recapitulate and amplify our main points. Let us begin with the interview. Since every person is different, no two interviews will be the same, but certain guiding principles can be followed. In the first place, we shall concentrate upon the patient himself, and endeavor to discern the major motivations of his life, and his relationships to his main feelings, conflicts and tensions. We shall be e…
