  • The Response to Psychotherapy in Chronic Ulcerative Colitis

Aaron Karush, George E Daniels et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1969

The outcome of psychotherapy in 30 patients with chronic ulcerative colitis was correlated with factors arising from the psychotherapeutic situation. Factors introduced by the therapist included his technical interventions, his personality, his attitudes toward the patient, his competence, and his grasp of the patient's psychodynamics. Patient factors included the latter's attitudes toward his illness and toward psychotherapy, his ability to chan…

  • The Response to Psychotherapy in Chronic Ulcerative Colitis

Aaron Karush, George E Daniels et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1968

The outcome of psychotherapeutic treatment of 30 patients with chronic ulcerative colitis was compared with 6 pretreatment factors: psychiatric diagnosis, precipitating stress, psychologic defenses, nature of object attachments, secondary elaboration of colitis symptoms, and ego strength. The study presented matches 40 schizophrenic ulcerative colitis patients to 40 non schizophrenic control patients in order to evaluate this relationship. Criteria for determining the course of colitis in the 2 g…

    George E Daniels, John F O’Connor et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1962

Ulcerative colitis holds a historic position in the psychosomatic movement in this country. Since the emotional factors in this disease were first described at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, special interest in this condition has continued there. Four members of the Columbia Psychoanalytic Clinic with special experience with the disease and with two gastroenterologists who have been associated with the three senior analysts in the inve…

  • Psychophysiological Correlations in Ulcerative Colitis

Aaron Karush, ROBERT B HIATT et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1955

Six patients with chronic ulcerative colitis were observed during psychotherapeutic interviews, and physiological activity of the salivary gland, colon and rectum, and peripheral-vascular bed was recorded simultaneously. The significant emotion in patients with ulcerative colitis, coincident with the appearance of segmental colonic motility, was fear. Where rage toward parental figures was present, its expression was inhibited by fear of retaliat…
