Quantifying Sources of Variability in Infancy Research Using the Infant-Directed-Speech Preference
Psychological scientists have become increasingly concerned with issues related to methodology and replicability, and infancy researchers in particular face specific challenges related to replicability: For example, high-powered studies are difficult to conduct, testing conditions vary across labs, and different labs have access to different infant populations. Addressing these concerns, we report on a large-scale, multisite study aimed at (a) as…
Time for Epideictic
When is epideictic rhetoric? In response to a critical review of our past and present, this essay offers a theoretical vision of rhetoric's potentiality. It is time to begin

From Infantile Citizens to Infantile Institutions: The Metaphoric Transformation of Political Economy in the 2008 Housing Market Crisis
The logic of political economy depends on a domestic metaphor, using the oikos or household as a model for the polis. Historically, this metaphor has imagined citizens as the children of a paternal state. However during the 2008 housing crisis, this metaphor was turned upside down, depicting citizens as the parents of infantile state institutions. Although initially portraying citizens as juvenile “delinquents,” the rhetoric of the mortgage crisi…
Voicing Terri Schiavo: Prosopopeic Citizenship in the Democratic Aporia between Sovereignty and Biopower
This essay examines the case of Terri Schiavo to develop a theory of prosopopeic democratic citizenship. Prosopopeia—the tropological attribution of voice—rhetorically sutures an aporia between sovereign and biopolitical modes of democratic governance. Citizens are split by the democratic rationality of self-governance: they act as sovereign subjects to govern themselves as biopolitical objects. However, that self-governing logic begins to falter…
Serializing Racial Subjects: The Stagnation and Suspense of the O.J. Simpson Saga
While critiques of racial essentialism have demonstrated decisively that race is rhetorically contingent, institutions of white privilege nevertheless remain distressingly durable. The continuing media coverage of Orenthal James “O.J.” Simpson since his 1995 acquittal exemplifies this chronic temporality of whiteness discourse. Over time, the Simpson case has become a series that gradually coordinated “black” and “white” collective subjects by st…
Using patient reports to assess hospital treatment of persons with Aids: A pilot study
Providing efficacious, compassionate, and efficient medical care to persons with HIV infection is one of the greatest challenges that will face US hospitals this decade. Unfortunately, there have been almost no studies of how organizational arrangements are related to the quality of care. We developed an interview protocol and conducted a pilot study to evaluate the instrument's ability to detect differences in selected interpersonal aspects of c…
