Proverbs and practical reasoning: A study in socio‐logic
Proverbs provide insight into the nature of socio‐logic as a body of principles to guide practical reasoning. English language proverbs reflect many of the rational principles found in argumentation textbooks, including: (1) a typology of arguments, (2) rules for correct inference, and (3) cautions about potential fallacies
Rhetoric and anti‐rhetoric in early American scientific societies
Under the influence of the Royal Society, and of Ramistic doctrine, early American scientists rejected rhetoric as an art of mere ornamentation. Later in the nineteenth century, the demands of scientific communication combined with the revised conception of rhetoric as effective prose composition to secure a role for the art in scientific discourse
The moderate republicans: Campaign for the nomination, Rockefeller, Lodge, Scranton
