The Color of Creatorship
The Color of Creatorship examines how copyright, trademark, and patent discourses work together to form American ideals around race, citizenship, and property. Working through key moments in intellectual property history since 1790, Anjali Vats reveals that even as they have seemingly evolved, American understandings of who is a creator and who is an infringer have remained remarkably racially conservative and consistent over time. Vats examines …
The structural whiteness of academic patronage
In this essay, we describe the protest cycle that begins when scholars from the margins make demands on an institution or on the discipline for changes to ameliorate structural inequalities and offer two interventions related to the gridlock described above. First, we chart the patronage dynamic that produces pathological economies of liberal reform in the field of rhetoric. And second, we present possible solutions to break those cycles to produ…

Containment as Neocolonial Visual Rhetoric
Grounding our evidence in Karl Lagerfeld's Paris-Shanghai: A Fantasy, a filmic homage to Coco Chanel, we theorize a “visual rhetoric of containment,” which limits the subjectivity of the racial Other and consolidates whiteness. The visual rhetoric of containment manifests in four ways: the creation and enactment of “the yellowface gaze,” which affirms whiteness through the eyes of the “native” Other, the affirmation of a post-feminist model of ex…
