  • Radiocarbon as a tracer of the fossil fraction of regional carbon monoxide emissions

Open Access•Liam Blyth, Heather Graven et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an atmospheric pollutant with a positive net warming effect on the climate. The magnitude of CO sources and the fraction of fossil vs biogenic sources are still uncertain and vary across emissions inventories. Measurements of radiocarbon ( 14 C) in CO could potentially be used to investigate the sources of CO on a regional scale because fossil sources lack 14 C and reduce the 14 C/C ratio (Δ 14 C) of atmospheric CO more th…

  • Assessing fossil fuel CO 2 emissions in California using atmospheric observations and models

    Open Access•Heather Graven, M L Fischer et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

Analysis systems incorporating atmospheric observations could provide a powerful tool for validating fossil fuel CO 2 (ffCO 2 ) emissions reported for individual regions, provided that fossil fuel sources can be separated from other CO 2 sources or sinks and atmospheric transport can be accurately accounted for. We quantified ffCO 2 by measuring radiocarbon ( 14 C) in CO 2 , an accurate fossil-carbon tracer, at nine observation sites in Californi…

  • Atmospheric Radiocarbon Workshop Report

Jocelyn Turnbull, Heather Graven et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 3

A workshop on atmospheric radiocarbon measurements was held in conjunction with the 21st International Radiocarbon conference in July 2012. The main topics were intercomparison of measurements of 14 C in atmospheric CO 2 , the potential for use of gas standards for atmospheric 14 C measurements, reporting of uncertainties, and expansion of intercomparison activities to other atmospheric trace gases. This report documents the discussions and concl…

  • Comparison of Independent Δ14CO2 records at Point Barrow, Alaska

    Heather Graven•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Cited by: 2

Two independent programs have collected and analyzed atmospheric CO2 samples from Point Barrow, Alaska, for radiocarbon content (Δ14C) over the period 2003–2007. In one program, flask collection, stable isotope analysis, and CO2 extraction are performed by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography's CO2 Program and CO2 is graphitized and measured by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In the other program,…

  • Initial Results of an Intercomparison of AMS-Based Atmospheric 14 CO 2 Measurements

Open Access•John Miller, Scott Lehman et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 19

This article presents results from the first 3 rounds of an international intercomparison of measurements of Δ 14 CO 2 in liter-scale samples of whole air by groups using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The ultimate goal of the intercomparison is to allow the merging of Δ 14 CO 2 data from different groups, with the confidence that differences in the data are geophysical gradients and not artifacts of calibration. Eight groups have participa…

Open Access•Michael Allen, Janet Ambers et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007

From the 19th International Radiocarbon Conference held in Keble College, Oxford, England, April 3-7, 2006
