  • Evolution of Waterways and Early Human Settlements in the Eastern Baltic Area

    Open Access•P M Dolukhanov, A M Shukurov et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Newly obtained radiocarbon measurements are used to suggest that the initial settlement of the northeastern Baltic area was largely controlled by the Ladoga-Baltic waterway in the north of the Karelian Isthmus, which emerged ∼11,500 cal BP and remained in action for ∼7000 yr. The transgression of Ladoga Lake started ∼5000 cal BP and reached its maximum at ∼3000 cal BP (∼1100–1000 cal BC). The formation of a new outlet via the Neva River led to a …

    Open Access•Pavel Dolukhanov, Pavel M Dolukhanov et al.•ARTICLE•Internet Archaeology•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 5

This article outlines the results of one of the aspects of a multidisciplinary project currently conducted in the upper part of the basin of the Western Dvina River in North-Western Russia. The project was targeted at prehistoric lake dwelling sites in the valley of Serteya River, a small tributary of the Western Dvina, and aimed at the precise dating of the initial transition from hunting-gathering to agriculture in that area. The methods used i…

  • Measurement of Radiocarbon Content in Leaves from Some Japanese Sites

Open Access•Yasushi Muraki, Kimiaki Masuda et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 11

We have measured radiocarbon contents in leaves collected from 15 sites in Japan, including mountain areas and big city areas for last three years. Comparing the radiocarbon contents in various areas, high 14 C concentrations (80–100‰ as δ 14 C) are seen for the leaves from the mountain and country sites. On the contrary, low concentrations (5–40‰) were observed for the leaves from city region, especially near the road with heavy traffic. These r…

  • New Data on Chronology of Landscape-Paleoclimatic Stages in Northwestern Russia During the Late Glacial and Holocene

    Open Access•Kh A Arslanov, L A Savelieva et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•References: 2

Two lake and bog sediments have been thoroughly studied using palynological and radiocarbon dating methods. These are the Lembolovskoye Lake section located in the southern part of the Karelian Ithmus and the Mshinskoye bog section located in the southwestern part of the Leningrad province. The data obtained allow us to reconstruct the main features of the vegetation cover evolution, the chronology for the appearance and a real distribution of th…

  • Chronology of Vegetation and Paleoclimatic Stages of Northwestern Russia During the Late Glacial and Holocene

    Open Access•Kh A Arslanov, L A Saveljeva et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1999•Cited by: 4•References: 2

We have studied 6 reference sections of bog and lake sediments in the Leningrad and Novgorod provinces to develop a geochronological scale for vegetational and paleoclimatic changes in northwestern Russia during the Late Glacial and Holocene. Every 10-cm layer along the peat and gyttja sections (4–8.5 m thick) was investigated palynologically and the great majority of them were radiocarbon dated. Using the data obtained, standard palynological di…

  • Consensus Dating of Mammoth Remains from Wrangel Island

    Open Access•Kh A Arslanov, G T Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•References: 4

Previous results from remains of tusks, teeth and bones collected from Wrangel Island (Vartanyan et al . 1995) had given results in the range 3730 bp to 20,000 bp and the authors had concluded that “mammoths inhabited Wrangel Island for as long as 6000 yr after the estimated extinction on the Siberian continent”. There still remained the question of the earliest date for such remains. Further, the authors had noted such samples may present some d…

  • The New Nagoya Radiocarbon Laboratory

Open Access•Yasushi Muraki, Grant Kocharov et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 9

A liquid scintillation counting apparatus that enables highly accurate measurements of 14 C has been constructed at the Solar-Terrestrial Environment Laboratory, Nagoya University. The main aim of the project is high precision year-by-year measurements of the 14 C content in tree rings of an old cedar tree from Yaku Island, Japan. We present the results of 14 C measurements on tree rings from the Agematsu region for recent decades to confirm the …

  • Radiocarbon Dating Evidence for Mammoths on Wrangel Island, Arctic Ocean, Until 2000 BC

    Open Access•S L Vartanyan, Kh A Arslanov et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1995•Cited by: 9•References: 6

Radiocarbon dating results of mammoth tusks, teeth and bones collected on Wrangel Island between 1989 and 1991 reveal a unique mammoth refugium during the Holocene. We used an improved chemical procedure to obtain and purify collagen from bone. Benzene synthesized from the samples was measured using a liquid scintillation counter. The validity of our data has been confirmed by the results of our measurements on two international control sample se…

  • Problems and Methods of Dating Low-Activity Samples by Liquid Scintillation Counting

    Open Access•Kh A Arslanov, T V Tertychnaya et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1993•Cited by: 7•References: 5

The important problem of contamination of old samples by younger 14 C necessitates treatment of organic and carbonate samples to ensure more complete removal of contaminating carbon. Here we present studies of chemical procedures for the liquid scintillation method of 14 C dating undertaken since 1960 in the former USSR. We discuss new procedures such as lithium carbide synthesis from charred organic samples and benzene synthesis on a V 2 O 5 ·Al…

  • An Improved Method for Radiocarbon Dating Fossil Bones

    Open Access•Х А Арсланов, Kh A Arslanov et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1993•Cited by: 46•References: 7

We demonstrate here that the use of either the acid-alkali or Longin method alone does not fully extract contaminants from bone-collagen fractions. We present our methods and results of extracting bone collagen that involve successive use of both of these methods

For determining age scintillation variant was used. Measurement of a large quantity of benzol [benzene] permitted reaching a limit of 62,000 yr without isotope enrichment. Precautions against contamination of the samples with contemporary carbon and tritium were taken in laboratory handling. Dating began only after it had been established that contamination had not taken place during chemical treatment. Benzol which displayed no radioactivity was…
