  • Development of Surficial Deposits on Belyi Island (Kara Sea) during the Last 40,000 Years

    Open Access•A Yurtaev, A Alexandrovskiy et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2018•References: 14

A series of radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates of peat and other materials, containing organic matter, were obtained from Belyi Island. We have identified a large group of dates associates with MIS 1, as well as a significant group of dates associated with the Kargin (MIS 3) period (40–31 ka cal BP). A large number of dates from the Late Glacial period and from the Early Holocene (MIS 1—ca. 14–9 ka cal BP) point to this time interval being associated with…

  • Radiocarbon Age of Soils in Oases of East Antarctica

    Open Access•E Zazovskaya, N Mergelov et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 24

This article discusses radiocarbon dating results for soils and soil-like systems in the East Antarctic oases, including Schirmacher, Thala Hills, and Larsemann Hills. The organic matter of endolithic and hypolithic systems, soils of wind shelters, and soils under moss-algae vegetation were dated along with micro- and macroprofiles. Organic matter pools formed under extreme climatic conditions and originated not from vascular plants but from cryp…

  • Organic Matter of Cultural Layers as a Material for Radiocarbon Dating

    Open Access•E Zazovskaya, V Shishkov et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•References: 12

This article focuses on radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating of the organic matter (OM) of natural-anthropogenic objects—the cultural layers (CLs) of archaeological sites. Using examples from three ancient sites located within the European part of Russia, in southern taiga and forest-steppe natural zones, we demonstrate approaches to the interpretation of 14 C dating of OM derived from the organomineral material of the CLs studied. We use the term “archaeo…

  • Reservoir Effect of Archaeological Samples from Steppe Bronze Age Cultures in Southern Russia

    Open Access•N Shishlina, V Sevastyanov et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2014•Cited by: 8•References: 12

Human and animal bone collagen from different Steppe Bronze Age cultures, including the Yamnaya, East Manych Catacomb, and Lola cultures, show large variations in δ 13 C and δ 15 N values. More positive values of δ 13 C and δ 15 N are caused by change in diet and/or a more arid climate. Human bones show reservoir effects caused by aquatic diet components. These effects can be quantified by paired dating of human bone and associated terrestrial sa…

  • Isotopes, Plants, and Reservoir Effects

    Open Access•N Shishlina, E Zazovskaya et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2012•Cited by: 12•References: 7

Bronze Age human and animal bone collagen from several steppe Bronze Age cultures (i.e. Early Catacomb, East and West Manych Catacomb, and Lola cultures) shows large variations in δ 13 C and δ 15 N values. In general, we observed that the older the sample, the lower the δ 13 C and δ 15 N values. We hypothesize that more positive values of δ 13 C and δ 15 N are caused by change in diet and a more arid climate. For ancient sheep during drier period…
