  • Major Patterns in the Neolithic Chronology of East Asia

    Open Access•Yaroslav V Kuzmin, J A Timothy Jull et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2009•Cited by: 9•References: 43

General chronological frameworks created recently for the Neolithic complexes of China, Japan, Korea, and far eastern Russia allow us to reveal temporal patterns of Neolithization, origin of food production, and the emergence of civilizations. Pottery originated in East Asia, most probably independently in different parts of it, in the terminal Pleistocene, about 14,800–13,300 BP (uncalibrated), and this marks the beginning of the Neolithic. Agri…

  • Preparation of Graphite Targets from Small Marine Samples for AMS Radiocarbon Measurements

Open Access•Laval Liong Wee Kwong, Pavel P Povinec et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 17

A vacuum sample processing line was set up and methods were developed for the determination of radiocarbon in small-volume seawater and biota samples. Seawater samples (500 mL per borosilicate glass bottle and poisoned with HgCl 2 ) were acidified with 5 mL concentrated hydrochloric acid. Pure N 2 was used as a carrier gas to strip CO 2 from the samples for 10 min in a circulation mode. After purification through several water traps, the CO 2 was…

  • Radiocarbon Beyond this World

    Open Access•J A Timothy Jull, Devendra Lal et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2000•Cited by: 3•References: 46

In this paper, we review the production of radiocarbon and other radionuclides in extraterrestrial materials. This radioactivity can be produced by the effects of solar and galactic cosmic rays on solid material in space. In addition, direct implantation at the lunar surface of 14 C and other radionuclides can occur. The level of 14 C and other radionuclides in a meteorite can be used to determine its residence time on the Earth's surface, or “te…
