  • Reforms in Chinese Higher Education and their Effect on Teacher Education in Inner Mongolia

    P E Hare, Peter Hare et al.•ARTICLE•Compare A Journal of Comparative…•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Inner Mongolia, as an under-developed autonomous region of the People's Republic of China, provides an interesting insight into the process of higher education reform in China. Drawing upon experience of a recent English language teaching project at the Inner Mongolia Teachers' University (IMTU) this article considers the effect of the reform process on teacher education in Inner Mongolia. These reforms are placed within the general context of in…

  • Earliest modern humans in southern Africa dated by isoleucine epimerization in ostrich eggshell

Open Access•Gifford H Miller, Peter Beaumont et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•1999

  • C Dating of Bone Using γ-Carboxyglutamic Acid and α-Carboxyglycine (Aminomalonate)

    Open Access•Richard R Burky, Donna L Kirner et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Cited by: 8•References: 32

Radiocarbon determinations have been obtained on γ-carboxyglutamic acid [Gla] and α-carboxyglycine (aminomalonate) [Am] as well as acid- and base-hydrolyzed total amino acids isolated from a series of fossil bones. As far as we are aware, Am has not been reported previously in fossil bone and neither Gla nor Am 14 C values have been measured previously. Interest in Gla, an amino acid found in the non-collagen proteins osteocalcin and matrix Gla-p…

  • Assessment of integrity and geochronology of archaeological sites using amino acid racemization in land snail shells: Examples from central Texas

Open Access•G Lain Ellis, Gene Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1996

Detailed racemization analyses were carried out on samples of the land snail Rabdotus mooreanus from archaeological sites at Fort Hood, in central Texas. D-alloisoleucine/L-isoleucine (A/I) values were determined for 260 individual shells from 29 proveniences, including sites in alluvium, colluvium, and rockshelters, as well as burned rock middens. A/I values show a good correlation with radiocarbon age, and so provide reasonably precise estimate…

  • Geochemical criteria for thermal alteration of bone

    Open Access•R E Taylor, P E Hare et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•1995•Cited by: 10•References: 1

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Biochemically Characterized Hair

    Open Access•R E Taylor, P E Hare et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1995•Cited by: 10•References: 18

A series of 14 C determinations have been obtained on hair samples principally from Holocene contexts that have been variously pretreated to examine different means of removing potential contamination. SEM photomicrographs have documented hair surfaces before and after different pretreatments. Amino-acid composition, C/N ratios and δ 13 C values have been obtained to biochemically characterize these samples and provide baseline data for future co…

  • Accelerator radiocarbon dating at the molecular level

  • Accuracy of North American Human Skeleton Ages

    Open Access•Thomas W Stafford, P E Hare et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1990

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dates fail to provide conclusive evidence that all New World human fossils are younger than approximately 11,000 yr. Because fossil bones vary widely in preservation, their radiocarbon dates are not equally accurate. Molecular-level radiocarbon dating, which used individual amino acids to assess fossil diagenesis, revealed that dates on known-age, noncollagenous bone were underestimated by at least …

  • AMS Radiocarbon Dating of Bones at Arizona

    Austin Long, A T Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1989•Cited by: 14

Modern bone contains ca 25% protein material, most of which is collagen. Amino acids separated from collagen isolated from bone are suitable for 14 C dating of fossil bone, but attempts to carry out this procedure on bones seriously depleted in protein can yield erroneous 14 C dates. Amino-acid analysis of fossil bone gives quantitative information on the degree of preservation of its organic component. Also, the relative abundance of the amino-a…

Open Access•N Turo, Noreen Tuross et al.•ARTICLE•Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta•1988

  • Effects of diagenesis on strontium, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen concentration and isotopic composition of bone

    Open Access•Bruce K Nelson, Michael J Deniro et al.•ARTICLE•Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta•1986

  • Use of AMS 14 C Analysis in the Study of Problems in Aspartic Acid Racemization-Deduced Age Estimates on Bone

    Open Access•Paul Ennis, E A Noltmann et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1986•Cited by: 3•References: 17

Major discordances between AMS 14 C- and aspartic acid racemization (AAR)-deduced age estimates on bone samples have led to an examination of factors other than time and temperature that can fundamentally influence the degree of racemization observed in fossil bone. Our studies support previous suggestions that for many bone samples the chemical state of amino acids must be routinely considered if AAR-deduced age estimates are to be used to make …
