  • Using a Soil Chronosequence to Identify Soil Fractions for Understanding and Modeling Soil Carbon Dynamics in New Zealand

    Open Access•Christine A Prior, W Troy Baisden et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•References: 18

We are developing practical methodologies to characterize pool sizes and residence times for fractions of soil organic matter (SOM) using radiocarbon, with a particular focus on SOM in New Zealand pasture soils that responds to global change on decadal timescales. As single mean residence times for the entire SOM pool can be misleading or uninterpretable, we focus on the use of samples collected about 7 and 40 yr after the bomb 14 C spike to sepa…

  • Anomalous Radiocarbon Dates from Easter Island

    Open Access•Kevin Butler, Christine A Prior et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•References: 6

The largest volcanic crater on Easter Island in the South Pacific contains a lake 1 km in diameter with large floating mats of vegetation, mainly Scirpus californicus . A core taken through a mat near the center produced anomalous dates, with older dates above younger ones. The possibility that the mat had become inverted was considered, but palynological evidence refutes this idea because it shows a progressive upward decline of forest pollen, w…

  • An AMS 14 C Pollen-Dated Sediment and Pollen Sequence from the Late Holocene, Southern Coastal Hawke'S Bay, New Zealand

    Open Access•Pamela I Chester, Christine A Prior•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 20

Hawke's Bay is a region of New Zealand where earliest settlement of indigenous people may have occurred. A sedimentological and palynological study of lake sediments from a small catchment was undertaken to reconstruct erosion, vegetation, and fire histories to determine human environmental impact, and thus add to knowledge of the timing of initial settlement of New Zealand. Precise dating was an essential facet of the research because of the sho…

  • AMS Dating of Pollen Concentrates—A Methodological Study of Late Quaternary Sediments from South Westland, New Zealand

    Open Access•Marcus J Vandergoes, Christine A Prior•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2003•Cited by: 15•References: 15

A simple method for preparing pollen concentrates for 14 C AMS dating is applied to organic and inorganic deposits from a peat bog in south Westland, New Zealand, from which preliminary AMS dating indicated age inversions and severe younger carbon contamination problems. The AMS ages of the pollen concentrates provided consistently older age estimates for each sample than ages derived from their respective organic residue or combined pollen and o…

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Biochemically Characterized Hair

    Open Access•R E Taylor, P E Hare et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1995•Cited by: 10•References: 18

A series of 14 C determinations have been obtained on hair samples principally from Holocene contexts that have been variously pretreated to examine different means of removing potential contamination. SEM photomicrographs have documented hair surfaces before and after different pretreatments. Amino-acid composition, C/N ratios and δ 13 C values have been obtained to biochemically characterize these samples and provide baseline data for future co…

  • University of Wisconsin Radiocarbon Dates XXVII

    Open Access•Christine A Prior, Lori F Phelps•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•References: 5

Procedures and equipment used in the University of Wisconsin laboratory have been described previously (Bender, Bryson & Baerreis 1965; Steventon & Kutzbach 1986). Except as otherwise indicated, wood, charcoal and peat samples are pretreated with dilute NaOH-Na 4 P 2 O 7 and dilute HCl before conversion to counting gas methane; when noted, marls and lake cores are treated with acid only
