Holocene variations in the Asian monsoon inferred from the geochemistry of lake sediments in central Tibet
We present a record of monsoon variations for the early and middle Holocene that is inferred from the geochemistry of sediment cores from Ahung Co, a lake in central Tibet. The resolution of this record is better than 50 yr and the age model is derived from radiocarbon ages of terrestrial charcoal, which eliminates errors associated with the lake hard-water effect. Pre-Bomb Δ 14 C Variability and the Suess Effect in Cariaco Basin Surface Waters as Recorded in Hermatypic Corals
The Δ 14 C content of surface waters in and around the Cariaco Basin was reconstructed from radiocarbon measurements on sub-annually sampled coral skeletal material. During the late 1930s to early 1940s, surface waters within and outside of the Cariaco Basin were similar. Within the Cariaco Basin at Islas Tortugas, coral Δ 14 C averages −51.9 ± 3.3%. A synthesis of abrupt changes in the Asian summer monsoon since the last deglaciation
We have compiled 36 previously published palaeoclimate records to determine the timing and spatial pattern of century-scale abrupt changes in Asian monsoon precipitation since the last deglaciation. We identify abrupt events from (1) the interpretations of the authors of these records and (2) the more objective moving t-test calculation. Our results indicate that abrupt climatic changes occurred at ~11.5 cal. ka, 4.5–5.0 cal. ka and ad 1300. At t…
