  • Radiocarbon Analysis of Soil Microbial Biomass via Direct Chloroform Extraction

    Open Access•Kari M Finstad, Erin E Nuccio et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•References: 25

Microbial processing of soil organic matter is a significant driver of C cycling, yet we lack an understanding of what shapes the turnover of this large terrestrial pool. In part, this is due to limited options for accurately identifying the source of C assimilated by microbial communities. Laboratory incubations are the most common method for this; however, they can introduce artifacts due to sample disruption and processing and can take months …

  • Assessing the Blank Carbon Contribution, Isotope Mass Balance, and Kinetic Isotope Fractionation of the Ramped Pyrolysis/Oxidation Instrument at Nosams

    Open Access•Jordon D Hemingway, Valier V Galy et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•Cited by: 8•References: 39

We estimate the blank carbon mass over the course of a typical Ramped PyrOx (RPO) analysis (150–1000°C; 5°C×min –1 ) to be (3.7±0.6) μg C with an Fm value of 0.555±0.042 and a δ 13 C value of (–29.0±0.1) ‰ VPDB. Additionally, we provide equations for RPO Fm and δ 13 C blank corrections, including associated error propagation. By comparing RPO mass-weighted mean and independently measured bulk δ 13 C values for a compilation of environmental sampl…
